Biography

Birth

Joseph Hutchinson was born in the District of Maine of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1755; the 1889 Free Baptist Cyclopaedia says he was born in Penobscot County, but Penobscot County was not formed until 1816.[1] He was the son of Stephen Hutchinson and Abigail (Haskins) Hutchinson.[2]

Marriage

Joseph Hutchinson married Rebecca LeGrow in 1778.[1]

Biographical Details

The 1889 Free Baptist Cyclopedia, says that Joseph Hutchinson was a soldier of the Revolution and moved with his father to Windham, Maine (then in Massachusetts) about 1780, by 1790 had become the ruling elder and an unordained preacher of a Freewill Baptist congregation at Hebron, Maine (also then in Massachusetts), and was ordained in the denomination nine years later.[1] Cutter's Historic Homes and Places and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Middlesex County, Massachusetts says the move to Hebron did not occur until 1794,[2] and the 1790 Census shows a Joseph Hutchinson living at Windham with five males under 16 and three females in his household,[3] so he was almost certainly still been living at Windham in that year.

Children

The 1889 Free Baptist Cyclopedia says that Joseph Hutchinson was the father of 11 children.[1] Nine of those children, born between 1779 and 1799, are listed in the 1915 history of Buckfield, Maine.[4]

Death

Joseph Hutchinson died at Hebron, Maine (then in Massachusetts), on 24 Feb 1801.[1][5] A FindAGrave memorial, with no photo, says he is buried at the Bog Brook Cemetery in Hebron.[6]
