Hiram Metcalf Huff was born on 2 Feb 1832, in Fleming County, Kentucky, to Hester Blair, age 44, and Samuel Huff, age 42. He was the 11th of 12 children born to them.[1][2][3]
In the 1850 census, Hiram (age 18), Wagoner, was in District 1, Fleming, Kentucky, United States, living with his parents and two of his brothers.[4]

In 1855, when Hiram was 23, he left Kentucky for Iowa. He first went by rail to Louisville, Kentucky, then by boat to Saint Joseph, Missouri. From there, he went by wagon to Harrison County, Iowa.[3]
On 24 Jun 1856, he married Lucinda (McGahan) Huff (1830-1918) in Ragland Township, Harrison County, Iowa.[2] Lucinda and Hiram had six children together, though only four would survive to adulthood:

He passed away at home on 11 Nov 1923, aged 91 years, 9 months, and 9 days. His son, J. W. Huff, was the attending doctor on the death certificate.[14][2] Hiram was buried in Soldier Valley Cemetery, in
Pisgah, Harrison County, Iowa. The memorial headstone lists the names, birth and death years of Hiram, his two daughters that died young, Lenorah and Hattie, and his wife, Lucinda. [15]
Hiram Huff was featured in a commemorative history of Harrison County citizens published in 1891.[3]
