Lucinda was born on 1 Dec 1830 in Coles County, Illinois, to William McGahan and his second wife, Rachel Unknown.[1] When Lucinda was seven years old, her father married Sabrina Sturdevant. Since no further record can be found of Lucinda's biological mother, it is assumed that Rachel died sometime before 1837.
Lucinda's granddaughter, Helen Laura (Huff) Lee (1896-1981), recalled that education was not considered important for girls in Lucinda's family. Consequently, Lucinda's vocabulary was limited, and her grammar was poor. Helen also noted that Lucinda often spoke about being a twin (Permelia) and said there were also triplets in the family. However, she never identified who they were or how extended that family was.
Lucinda and her husband, Hiram Huff, had six children together. Sadly, two of them died young: Lenorah Laura Huff (1860-1871) and Hattie B Huff (1864-1865). Their other children were John William, Clara, Benjamin Franklin (Frank), and Thomas Carson (T.C.).
In 1851, Lucinda and Permelia were living in Pottawattamie County, Iowa with their father, stepmother Sabrina, and half-sister, Jane. [2]
Per her obituary, Lucinda married Hiram Huff on 24 Jan 1856 in Raglan, Harrison, Iowa. (This is consistent with the 1900 census data.) The Iowa state census also records them as living here.[3]
In the 1860 census, Lucinda (age 29) was in Sioux, Harrison, Iowa. Living with her were her husband, Hiram, and two children, John and Laura. [4]
In the 1870 census, Lucinda (age 39), Keeping House, was in Little Sioux, Harrison, Iowa, living with her husband and four children.[5]
In the 1880 census, Lucinda (age 49), was the wife of Hiram Huff in Little Sioux, Harrison, Iowa, United States. In the household with her were her husband and three children.[6]
In the 1900 census, Lucinda (age 68) was the wife of Hiram M Huff in Missouri Valley, Harrison, Iowa.[7]
In the 1910 census, Lucinda (age 79) was the wife of Hiram M Huff in Baker Ward 4, Baker, Oregon, United States.[8]
She died at her home in Baker City, Oregon, on 27 Dec 1918, at the age of 87. Her husband, Hiram, survived her for almost five years. Lucinda and Hiram were buried in Soldier Valley Cemetary, in Harrison County, Iowa, along with their little girls, Lenora and Hattie.
