Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Tabitha (Hudson) Martin was a Virginia colonist.

Tabitha was born about 1770 in Virginia. She is the daughter of Peter Hudson and Mourning Griffin. She passed away before Sept 1799 in Halifax County, Virginia (date husband Jonathan Martin remarried).

Tabitha married Abraham Womack as second wife on 7 October 1785 in Halifax County, Virginia.[1] Abraham passed away about 1790/93 in Halifax, County. They had no known children.

Tabitha married second Jonathan Martin on 7 February 1794 in Halifax County, Virginia.[2] They had children:

  1. Peter Hudson Martin, 1795
  2. Alexander Martin, 1797

Research Notes

There could be a problem with either Tabitha's marriages or her parentage. We do have the record for her marriage as the second wife of Abraham Womack. He was quite a bit older than Tabitha and the couple had no children. All his children are from his first marriage to Ann Unknown.

Tabitha's second marriage to Jonathan E Martin is also documented. They had two children before Tabitha's death. The oldest was Peter Hudson Martin, born about 1795. This son is obviously named for Tabitha's father, Peter Hudson. And this is where the problem arises.

The will of Peter Hudson dated 30 March 1803 and proved 27 February 1804 in Halifax County, Virginia names five of his children:

Item I give to five of my children, five shillings each, to witt, Susannah Holland, Tabatha Womack, Sarah Vasser, Charles Hudson, and Peter Hudson.[3]

This bequest indicates that Peter was aware of Tabitha's marriage to Abraham Womack, but apparently unaware of her subsequent marriage to Jonathan Martin, the birth of her children and her death. Both families were still living in Halifax County, Virginia. It is possible that somehow Tabitha moved far enough away from her father that they lost contact. But this remains a problem.

Tabitha was born in 1776. She was the daughter of Peter Hudson and Mourning Griffin. She passed away in 1797.

Tabitha married Jonathan Edward Martin on Feb 07, 1794 in Halifax, Halifax, Virginia.

Tabitha Hudson was the first wife of Jonathan Martin.

HI! I am connected through Susanna Hudson Holland. Because I have almost no info on the Hollands of that period, I study a lot of the siblings and etc. My question is: why would Tabitha be in the 1803 will of her father if she had died in circa 1799? Also, her father lists her as "womack" implying that she was not yet re-married? While it's only a matter of five years or so, something seems wrong here? Anybody else have any info? TIA

Hudson-1222 and Hudson-1509 appear to represent the same person because: same birth date; both married to Johnathan Martin
Hudson-5371 and Hudson-1222 appear to represent the same person because: no birth/death dates on one; but both married to Abraham Womack II
