Biography

Jessie was born March 9, 1873 in Parma, Michigan. Her first occupation was that of a 3rd Grade School Teacher in Jackson, Michigan at age 15.

[more to come]

Later She Married Charles J. Garey and moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan. Jessie Hogle maintained a Journal for most of her life and passed out as she would so often say April 23, 1951. [1]

Jessie started a Journal, (in fact there are 2), in 1880 and continued her journal up to her death. When she passed her childern went through her effects...and nobody wanted these old books. Finally my Grandmother, her daughter Wahneta Bertha Garey had a second thought and plucked them from the trash and took them home at the end of the day, per my mother

My Grandmother Wahneta Bertha Garey, Jessie's Daughter never said much about the family, other then to say when asked, "We go way, way back", as if embarrassed to even try to explain what she knew. But, she would always listen intently as others told of their family. She was smart, really, really smart being one of the first women to attend College in Michigan. She loved to cook, and eat what she cooked. Back then though, if she ever said anything it went in one of my ears and out the other. Shoulda coulda, suppose that is why she grabbed these books out of the trash. Just for this someday. Because of what Wahneta did, that day day over 70 years ago, she passes forward the work of her Mother and Grandmother, and many like them down too all of us. Like I said she was smart.

My Grandmother Wahneta Bertha Garey, passed her effects down to my mother who is still living so will not me mentioned.

Then about 1998, I got interested in the "family", at which point my Mother said, "I have some old family books that may help you out."

I've had this infomation since then, totally facinating. but back then there wasn't a whole lot to do with it. Then I got a scanner for Christmas and started scanning all our old pictures, then my mother-in-laws, then my parents. When the thought occurred to me to get out those old journals that were locked up in a filing cabinet in my basement office from Great Grandmother Jessie and scan them too.

It all boils down to this; We are the Children of Vikings as she discovered so many years ago as She was on a quest to get into the Daughters of the American Revolution. Man did she go beyond that. Her father Gilbert Bruce Hogle served in the Civil War, she must have been after a double header so to speak. She preserved his Discharge Papers to make it easier for us. And she also made room in her Journal for the lost but not forgotten George Japhet Leighton & Dallas Hogle her Uncles who lost their lives and everything else of this World for their Country and Yours. She made special note of them and they should be honored on this site, they deserve it. On my Wife's side there is John Gray who served in the Eighth Michigan Cavalry.(edit, with the help of the internet we are passing 40)

It's almost like, everybody that could carry a gun got into the act, and that's almost entirely true of men of age during the Revolution; My wife even has an Ancestor, Joseph Reed, Pensioned for giving up a Wagon load of Supplies and a Team, because he was too old to fight with a gun, but it was critical at the time because he was from Monmouth, New Jersey.

A True Family Historian, Seventy Two Years later, (c.2013), I've taken her original work to a new level using the power of the internet to pass it forward for future generations to keep. As many of the facts and dates passed between the family appear on no public records and should therefore be preserved for our family.

The main focus of her journal seems to connect early family from Massachusetts, and New England, through their Migration into and out of New York. New York was a Black Hole along with the states of Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire as the family was always pushing West and were usually among the first settlers in a given area. Where there is a book about a town settlement our family usually appears, when not, she used her contacts across the country to glean information. Her oldest living contact in the journal was her Grandfathers Brother Nate Leighton Born on Feb 8 1804, in Mount Vernon, Kennebec, Maine, USA. Who tells a story about his Father and his family moving from Maine to New York in 1819, "We removed with father to the State of New York, and settled in Wayne County; coming to that place in a one-horse vehicle, changing from wheel to sleigh, and sleigh to wheel as the going permitted. I was the oldest of five children."

I have identified 4, one more to go on that one.

I've taken her work a step further to include my Wife's Family for, 'our' descendants, so when they look at a history book in a future classroom, they see our story. But, that's where it really get's confusing, because we are related to the same people, and my wife is like a very distant aunt of mine yet I'm 6 years older then her.

(edit 4 April 2015)

I'm going have to break this Journal into Branches. Because we are both related to John Alden of the Mayflower, and it's worse, our daughter is related to her Husband.

That just what happen if you are the first ones there, and don't move on to someplace else. How do you do a tree on that? I'm going to have to think on that some more, as my cousins husbands are related to me too. There is just no easy way out, more time is needed to pass this work forward properly and maybe somebody will help me out..

Anyway, here are some of the more interesting Ancestors.

Were Mayflower Passengers

John Alden, Priscilla (Mullins) Alden, Isaac Allerton Sr., Mary (Norris) Allerton, Remember (Allerton) Maverick, , William Brewster, Mary ? Brewster, James Chilton, Mary (Winslow) Chilton, Susanna (Furner) Chilton, Edward Doty Sr, Stephen Hopkins, Constance (Hopkins) Snow, Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland, John Howland, Alice ? Mullins, William Mullins, John Tilley, Joan (Hurst) Tilley & Richard Warren on a ship of 104 passengers, and 1/2 died the first winter.

Signed the Mayflower Compact

John Alden, Isaac Allerton, William Brewster, Edward Doty Sr, Stephen Hopkins, John Howland, William Mullins , Degory Priest, John Tilley & Richard Warren

Fought as Revolutionary War Soldiers

Elijah Alden, Daniel Alden, Jarib Bacon, Timothy Bannister, Joshua Blodgett, Benjamin Carpenter IV, David Carpenter, John Cleveland, Samuel Cole III, John D. Edgell, Jonathan Grant, Captain Edward Gray III, David Hicks, Jonathan Ingalls Sr., Jonathan Ingalls Jr., William Jones, Sr., William Jones, Jr., Solomon Leighton, David Lillie, Charles Mann, Caleb Olin, Joseph Reed, Daniel Rider III, Daniel Rider IV, and Jonah Tirrell.

And I quit counting these guys.....I swear, give me a gun and let's go hunt the British.

Well I counted them again 4/9/2015. There were 47.

Problem is some just grabbed a gun and showed up, some signed a piece of paper, and yet the D.A.R. acknowledges them all. I'm looking for soldiers who fought for a long lime. Still haven't figured it out. I'm thinking of doing them by Battles they were in vs. signing a treasonous paper with the risk of being hung.

I even have a Great Uncle who won the Nobel Peace Prize. Now that's hard to believe coming from folks who wrote their names with x's.

[edit I'm just getting started here]

Since then...I've been on a mission to get her work on the internet. Started by creating a MyHertage Site to compile her Records and share them will living family members. Now I'm on a Mission to do her lifes work justice in this WiKiTree.[2]

Everything on WikiTree is a collaborative work-in-progress. Except this Bio. When I find her contributors below...I will link them by name and family...but frankly I don't know any of them they are all dead. But the journal will get me to them and their families...it will just take some time. What a wonderful puzzle to play with.

This bio will change as I learn how to use Wiki Tree and any discoveries will be linked back to her and her journal. It won't happen tomorrow, but hey this thing has sat for 72 years without anybody giving it a really good look...and there is only one copy so be bear with me here.

January 13th 2014 Update

I have been able to locate about 5 More of the below source contacts in "our", the Wiki Tree during the last 9 months. If you are related to any of the below sources I will gladly open up these profiles so that you may enter more information.

July 29th 2014 Update

Down to 4 sources

August 1 2014

Be Patient, there is a lot of information, and it's doesn't make sense to me until the family members get "hooked up", so I can consider who the hell they are taking about in their letters.

PLEASE.....if you would like to see the tree in progress you can view it here;

http://www.myheritage.com/site-201977311/family-tree

If you are related, you are welcome to join, simply ask! I could really use a hand moving information from the private site over to the WikiTree. So that living family members can hook up.

April 24th 2015, Holton Gary, Holland Gary, We Say Holden Garey Update

We Found Holten Gary Born 3 Jul 1805 in Westminster, Windham, Vermont, USA. In Well-Elmer Cemetery in Rossburg, Allegany County, New York, USA, one of the Lost Branches of John Gary Sr. and Ruth Hatch.

A little back ground.....If the family sir name would have been Jones we wouldn't have so many variations of the name I call Garey, Because that's what my Ancestors called themselves(unless you are my Daughter who writes my middle name as Gary on her Marriage License, I just wanted to tear it up. I mean we been in this County since day one and we still don't know what our name is.), but it you go to Vermont and now New York it's Gary, If you go back to Massachusetts it's Geary, and if you go south on our branch from Michigan it goes back to Geary. I think it has to do with hearing and Education which I think was Holtens problem too. Because he come out of Vermont as what I believe is Holden Garey, and end up in New York as Holland Gary, But the proper pronunciation is Gear-ey according to my 15 year old Great Grandmother School Teacher...but I digress.

Holten is a strange name as it appears nowhere in our Garey history so having the Mid-west perspective, I tried Holden Gary, Holden Geary, Holden Garey and turned up nothing after the maiden name of the Grandmother, as I also carry as my middle name the maiden name of my Grandmother. Figuring he died young and nothing was written, I gave him up for dead has a child.

Until I ran into this Yesterday on FamilySearch.org;

Note BIRTH: 1. Vermont vital Records, 1760-1954: HOLTON GARY, birth-male, birth July 3 - 1805, father GARY JOHN, town of Westminster. (Charles Wright , pontegwatrail@netzero.net, says this card is actually a transcription from the old books. They went through and put them all on index cards for easy lookups and to stop using the old books (falling apart) to save them; note on the card at the bottom right, after "Town Clerk" it says "no name", that's because it's a transcription, and the transcriber is letting us know that the town clerk didn't add his name on the original. So I believe "Holton" is a misspelling (handwriting interpretation) or a misunderstanding as there were MANY "Holtons" in Westminster (I descend from them) and since Holland is uncommon, they thought it was Holton instead.)

CHURCH: 1. "HOLLAND GARY joined the Congregational Church in Westminster, [Windham, Vermont], May 6, 1823, and was dismissed, April 11, 1836, as it says he moved to "Western, NY." [source: Charles B. Wright, P.O. Box 519, Walpole, NH 03608].

MARRIAGE: 1. Vermont, Vital Records, 1760-1954: groom HOLLAND GARY, male, residence of groom Westminster, bride MARY E. WRIGHT, date of marriage 15 Dec 1833 at Westminster, Vermont, film #00527556, digital folder #004661689, image #01618. [from actual record: name of party officiating - Sylvester Sage Minister, [signed] Sylvester Sage, Town Clerk.]

DEATH and BURIAL: 1. "The Wells Elmer Cemetery 20.2 is located on Lot 110 as shown on the 1869 Map of Hume. It is very accessible as it is mowed and located immediately next to Route 19 A, just north of Rossburg. In an attempt to compile a more complete list, the following was assembled from several recordings done over the last 70 years: Gertrude Barber's 1933 reading, Archie Eldridge's c.1968 reading and an inventory in 2003 by Town Historian Rondus Miller. Assembled by Mary Rhodes, 2005." Wells Elmer Cemetery, Town of Hume, Allegany, New York: ELNORA EVELINA GARY, daughter of Holland and Mary E. [The following are probably the same Holland and Mary Gary, but surname was put as given name for Holland, and Mary had surname Holland to match her husband. To which I repled;

Note

Holden is the Maiden name of his Grand Mother. This family has it's names spelled in at least 3 variations, Gary, Geary, Garey, I think that has to do with lack of education. I go by Thomas Garey. I think the original transcription should have been Holden vs. Holten. As the name Holten appears nowhere in our family record. Also, on that 1850 Census the Mother is Ruth Hatch who Married John Garey, Sr., in Walpole, Cheshire, New Hampshire, USA on 25 Nov 1785. Both Parents are Buried in Westminster, Windham, Vermont, USA at Old Westminster Cemetery, Westminster, Windham County, Vermont, USA. That Being Edward Garey and Phebe Holden, along with Isaiah Hatch and Joanna Whitcomb.

Below Isaiah Hatch, all of the children are his decendants and of the Mayflower via; Edward Doty, Sr. and Richard Warren. Through Isaiah Hatch.

I always knew him as Holten from the Transcription, and thought he was dead without issue. But from Holten to Holland to what I think is Holden Garey, again after his Grandmother. His Nephew Ephriam Garey the Son of John, Jr., was also living in Granger, New York during that same time when he Married Betsey Townsend, in Granger, New York on 17 Apr 1851. He joined his Father John, Jr. in Michigan soon after the death of Betsey Townsend's Mother Julia A. Jones, and probably Ruth Garey(Hatch). Because by 1870 our entire branch moved to Michigan. And set up near Jackson, Michigan.

I can Verify from family Journals that our Family was in Granger, Allegany, New York, USA during this time.

Now the big question; Does anybody know what happened to Providence Garey/ Gary their Sister so I can update the Family Records.....Thanks to much. Thomas Garey

That's an Ah ha moment if there ever was one, Ruth Hatch is in his house on the 1850 census, and they are all buried in the same Cemetery like Corn in a row. I'd like to welcome all my cousins back to their Family Tree. Only in this Family could we have screwed this up so bad. But the truth lies where they lie in Rossburg, Allegany County, New York, USA. You crazy Holland Garys . Don't even know your own name, It's Holden Garey...my 15 year old Great Grandmother 3rd grade teacher could have told you that.....LOL! My God...

[Note: Information has been put up and Ancestry.com, because every Tree there dead ends at Holland Gary, and to the Profiles mangers at Find a grave to get this lost branch hooked back up. All the graves have been identified and Photoed they just need to be linked]
