William was born before 1858.

William was born in 1858 and was christened on 01 May 1858 in Watford, Hertfordshire, England.^[1] He was the son of Jane Hendy. ^[2]

At the 1881 census he was living on Oxford St in London. At the age of 23, he was employed as a porter in the household of Elizabeth Wayre. ^[3]

In 1887 he married Sarah Hunt from Dorset. The marriage was registered in the Pancras area of London. ^[4]

By the time of the 1891 census they had three children: Beatrice Hendy (3), Henry Hendy (2) and Alfred Hendy (1). They were living on Westmorland Place, London and William was working as a draper's porter. ^[5]

In 1901, William and Sarah were living on Little Ebury Street, London along with their three children. William's occupation at this time was "road sweeper". ^[6]
