Biography

Lonie was born on 22 April 1913^[1] in North Carolina. She was the daughter of Corin Lucian Helms and Lula M (Phillips) Helms.^[2] Her mother died in 1918 and her father remarried. She was living with him and her step mother in Clear Creek, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, in 1920.^[2]

Lonie's step-sister Dorothy was born in 1921 and her stepmother died in 1923. Her father, left to care for two little girls, married again just over a year later. They were all living in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, in 1930 where Lonie was working as a spinner in a cotton mill. Although she was living at home, she may have been married the year before.^[3]

She and Leroy Love applied for a marriage license on 16 May 1931 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina,^[4] and were married there on the same day.^[5]

In 1940, Leroy and Lonie were living in Kannapolis, Cabarrus, North Carolina. They were sharing a rented home with Maude Brock and all three worked at a mill. Leroy as a stationman, Lonie as a spinner, and Maude as an inspector.^[6]

In 1950 according to a city directory Lonie and Leroy were living in Kannapolis, North Carolina, where Leroy worked for Cannon Mills.^[7]

Leroy died in 1986. Lonie lived another ten years and, at some point, moved to Cabarrus County, North Carolina. There she died at the age of 82 on 1 April 1996.^[8]

Lonie was buried in Carolina Memorial Park, Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA.^[1]

Research Notes

The 1930 Census reports that she was married at age 15 but was living back at home at age 16. There are no Louise Helms marriages in North Carolina between 1925 and 1930. There are two Louise Helms marriages in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, in that time period but neither appears to be the same person as that represented by this profile. More research is needed.
