Biography
William Hawke was born in the parish of Bere Ferrers, Devon on 13 November 1811. His parents were Nathaniel 1770 and Mary Metters.[1]
He married Susanna Benney and they emigrated to South Australia on the Java in 1839-40 with three children. He later gave evidence at a medical inquest about his voyage. The first three children possibly died of cholera or starvation on the voyage.[1]
His children were:[1]
- Mary 19 September 1835-perhaps 8 March 1840,
- Joseph 4 February 1837 -perhaps 20 February 1840,
- Mary perhaps 6 July 1840 - died a young infant
- Emma Benney 5 September 1841-1923 m. Porter,
- Ellen Jane 26 August 1844, Ridleys Farm Port Rd[2]
- Emily Frances 22 December 1846, Bowden[3]
- William Henry 29 March 1849 at North Kapunda[4] 20 January 1933 at Adelaide m. Sarah Anne Gower
- Susan (Hawke) Edgecombe 7 May 1851, North Kapunda - 18 May 1908
- Joseph 7 May 1855 Gawler Plains - 11 December 1934
It is not yet known how and why William was back in Cornwall when he died in 1872.[1]
