Research Notes

Joseph was my grandfather, Frederick Gower Hawke's youngest paternal uncle. His (Joseph's) father was William Hawke (13/11/1811-5/11/1872) who was born in the parish of Bere Ferrers, Devon and died in Redruth , Cornwall. His death is the mystery we would like to solve. Returning to Joseph, his siblings were:

Mary 19/9/1835-perhaps 8/3/1840,
Joseph 4/2/1837 -perhaps 20/2/1840,
Mary perhaps 6/7/1840 - died a young infant
Emma Benney 5/9/1841-1923 m. Porter,
Ellen Jane27/8/1844,
Emily Frances 19/12/1846,
William Henry 5/3/1849 at North Kapunda 20/1/1933 at Adelaide m. Sarah Anne Gower
Susan (Hawke) Edgecombe 7/5/1851-18/5/1908
and lastly Joseph himself.

The "perhaps" with the first three children come about because we, the family of Frederick Gower, 8th child of William Henry and Sarah (née Gower), had assumed from records at the Maritime Museum at Port Adelaide, that William and his wife Susanna (née Benney) came on a ship called the "John" and that the first three children died as a result of a cholera outbreak but we now find that William was called to give evidence at a Medical Inquest about his voyage on an earlier ship "The Java", and that the children were among 55 passengers who died of starvation en route. Joseph's grandparents were Nathaniel 1770 and Mary Metters, his ggf was Nathaniel 1750 d. 1778 in Gwennap, Cornwall and his wife also Mary. [2]
