Biography

Anne (Hatch) Phillips immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Anne Hatch Torrey Phillips was born on Dec 3 1626 in Wye, England[1] to William Hatch and Jane King. William and his family first arrived in America on the ship Hercules in March 1634/1635, sailing from Sandwich, England. The family first settled in Scituate Massachusetts.

She first married James Torrey on Nov 2, 1643 in Scituate, Mass.[2][3] James was in the militia of Plymouth prior to King Phillip's War as a Lieutenant beginning in 1655.[4]

James was involved in many activities important to the settlement:

  • in 1652, James participated in the General Court as a part of the Grand Enquest.[5]
  • On 7 June 1653, was propounded as a Freeman.[6]
  • On 6 March 1654/1655 served on a jury.[7]
  • on 1 May 1655 was admitted as Freedman.[8]
  • 8 June 1655 was made lieutenant for the militia of Scittuat.[9]
  • On 3 June 1656, served as deputy.[10]
  • On 3 June 1656, was chosen as part of a committee to lay out land (survey).[11]
  • On 3 June 1656, served as deputy.[12]
  • On 3 June 1657 was on a committee to secure gunpowder for the use of the militia and safety of the town.[13]
  • On 2 October 1658 was chosen to serve on the Council of War as an advisor.[14]
  • On 7 June 1659, was chosen as deputy for Scituate.[15]
  • On 6 June 1660 was again chosen as deputy.[16]
  • On 5 March 1660/1661 served on a jury for a murder trial.[17]
  • On 7 May 1661 surveyed land.[18]
  • On 4 June 1661 was chosen as deputy and treasurer.[19]
  • On 27 September 1664, James was authorized as a magistrate [20]
  • He witnessed documents.[21]
  • Organized horses for deputies as needed (as Lieutenant Torrey.[22]

Children of James and Anne (Hatch) Torrey:

  1. James, b. 3 September 1644[23][24]
  2. William, b. 15 March 1646[23][24]
  3. Joseph, b. 18 March 1648[23][24]
  4. Demaris, b. 26 October 1651[23][24]
  5. Jonathan, b. 20 September 1654[23][24]
  6. Mary, b. 14 February 1656[23][24]

  8. Joanna, b. 4 May 1663[23][24]
  9. Bethia, b. 19 July 1665[24]

James died 6 July 1665, just days before the birth of his youngest child.[25]

If there is a will, it has not yet been located, however the list of goods and chattels for James Torrey shows his estate listed about 102£.[26] Quite possibly because of the service of Lieutenant james Torrey and on 3 October 1665, the town granted two hundred acres to the four younger sonnes (not listed by name) of James were granted two hundred acres of land "above Weymouth, neare unto the line of Massachusetts". On the same date, letters of administration were granted to Anne the relect (widow) of Lieutenant James Torrey, late of Scituate, deceased...[27] On 1 May 1666, surveyors were chosen to lay out the land for these sons.[28] On 30 May 1666, the land was ready for the sons of Lieutenant James Torrey.[29]

Her second marriage was to John Phillips on April 3 1677.

Anne Hatch died Abt 1691 at Marshfield, Plymouth, Ma .
