William Hatch migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Great Migration (Series 2), by R. C. Anderson, vol. 3, p. 241) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
William [1][2][3] (Elder) Hatch. [4] was born 14 OCT 1598 in Wye, Kent, England. Alternate birth date "about 1595". He was the son of William Hatch and Ann Tilden.[5]
William, with his wife and children, first arrived in America on the ship Hercules of Dover in March 1635, sailing from Sandwich (the Hercules sailed twice - once from London in 1634 and once from Sandwich in 1635), England.[6][7] The manifest lists the family as follows:
Hatch William of Sandwich, Merchant
Hatch, Jane, wife
Hatch Walter, son
Hatch John, son
Hatch William, son
Hatch Anne, daughter
Hatch Jane, daughter
They settled in Scituate.
"Wiliam Hatch, Senir and elder, deceased November the sixt, 1651."[8][9]
William married by license, Jane Young, July 9, 1624,[10] with whom he already had a son, Walter baptized in March 1623. (Prior to the discovery of the baptism in the St. Dustan, Stepney, Parish register, it was believed that William had a first wife by whom he had his first son Walter, and that the reference to him as bachelor in his marriage to Jane Young was a clerical error. The baptism confirms that Walter was born to the couple prior to their marriage.).[11] William and Jane had six additional children all born in England: John, Anne, a son, William, Jane and Andrew.
His Will was dated November 5, 1651 and proved on June 3, 1652. The Inventory was taken on June 3, 1652, and totaled £95, 3s, 4p, and apparently included no real estate. [12]In his Will, he mentioned:
Wife Jane
Daughters Jane Lovell, Ann Torry
Grandchildren John Lovell, James Torrey, William Torrey, Joseph, Damaris
Andrew bp 3 November 1633 Wye, Kent bur 6 Nov 1633 Wye, Kent
Research notes
According to Anderson, William Hatch was a "contentious man" as seen in his involvement in a number of law suits. He came on the Hercules with five servants, William Holmes, Joseph Ketcherell, Simon Ketcrell, Symon Sutton, and Lida Wells. He returned to England, and came back on the Castle in 1638.

"William Hatch, the first of the name in America, and one of the earliest settlers of Scituate, Mass., was a native of Sandwich, County of Kent, England, from which place he emigrated to New England before 1633. In the course of a year or two he went back to England for his family, and returned in March, 1635, in the ship Hercules with his wife Jane, five children and six servants. He was a merchant of ability, and first ruling elder of Scituate's second church, which was founded in 1644. He was also a lieutenant of militia."

Can anyone confirm the last name of his mother and the date of his baptism? Anderson and others refer to his mother as Anne _____. And for his date of birth, Anderson estimates 1595, and it looks like there are other baptisms around the same time period in Kent (see : https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/M96B-C1T).
probably data should remain as per Anderson... Mother: Anne ___ . William b. about 1595.
M, I see there is what seems to be a contradictory statement under marriage: "William and Jane had six additional children all born in England, were from this second marriage: John, Anne, a son, William, Jane and Andrew." Please clarify. Thanks.
I think it is important to mention the reason a wealthy merchant would leave England for America...
William Hatch II (hatch-316) "By the time William left with his family for America, he was tired of squabbling over tiny patches of English soil, arguing about the corrupt church, the shifting ideas of the soul, good deeds versus grace."
I agree that Ms. Messer said that, but ... how does she know what William's thoughts and reasons were? If she were citing letters written by him, perhaps, but I think she's making suppositions.
I would say in a literal sense your point is definitely valid. I was coming from a broader text, trying to get a sense of why he would leave a cozier prosperous life to risk his life and family on a perilous journey to place full of unknowns and extreme discomforts with a multitude of hazards.
Hatch-4866 and Hatch-316 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate, same son, similar birth date. Multiple merges on this line coming.
This source includes several lawsuits against William Hatch. _Note-book Kept by Thomas Lechford, Esq., Lawyer: In Boston, Massachusetts Bay, from June 27, 1638, to July 29, 1641_.

Hatch-2341 and Hatch-316 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles that appear to be for the same person are showing up on my error/suggestions report. I'm not sure why, since I'm not a manager of either of them. But I thought I'd take a look anyway and see if this was a valid merge. One has no vital details and no profile manager. I think the easiest thing to do is for you to adopt the profile with no manager, Hatch-2341, and then merge the two into your profile Hatch-316. That will make the duplicate disappear. Hope this makes sense. Let me know if I've missed something here.
