Biography
Elizabeth Harpur was the eldest child of Joseph Harpur and Sarah Chidley. She was born in 1808 at Parramatta[1]. She married John Rotton on 18 February 1826 in St Matthews, Windsor[2]. She had three daughters in quick succession: Elizabeth born at Newcastle on 17 November 1826, Sarah Chidley born at Patricks Plains on 14 December 1827 and Ann, born 17 July 1830 also at Patricks Plains. After that all her children died as infants: John Charles Frederick (04 April 1833, Patricks Plains), Henry Francis (20 July 1835, Sydney), Laura Jane (28 June 1837, Sydney) and Charles (23 July 1843, Pararamatta)[3].
After her husband's death on 21 August 1852 at Mudgee, Elizabeth apparently changed her name from the unsavory Rotton to Madden. No record of a marriage to Mr Madden has been recorded, but Madden was the legal name she had in 1866 at her mother's death[4]. Elizabeth Harpur died on 15 November 1890[5].
