Biography

Parents and Ascension to Peerage

Sir John Hamilton of Carriden and Bargany was the son of Sir John Hamilton of Lettrick and his wife Jean Campbell.[1][2] John's date of birth is unknown and is estimated. During his father's lifetime he was known as John Hamilton of Carriden,[3] until, being raised to the peerage on 16 November 1641, he took the title of Lord Bargany.[4] Lord Bargany was served heir to his father on 23 April 1642.[2][5]

Political Involvements

Sir John Hamilton, Lord Bargany, was a staunch royalist who, in 1648, raised a regiment of foot and accompanied James, first duke of Hamilton, on his incursion into England.[6] The Scottish force lost this encounter and both Hamilton and Bargany were captured, Bargany being held as a prisoner in England for at least a year.[6] After his release, he traveled to the Netherlands to attend the court of King Charles and later went to Scotland to raise money for the effort to restore Charles to the throne.[2][6]

When Charles reached England in 1651, Lord Bargany was sent to the north of Scotland to raise a levy necessary to fund Charles's army.[6] When that army was eventually defeated, Lord Bargany was once again taken prisoner on 28 August 1651[7] and spent the following year in the Tower of London.[8] Cromwell made a point of exempting him out of his Act of Grace and Pardon passed 12 April 1654.[2]

Marriage and Children

In 1632 he married Jean Douglas, second daughter of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas, and his (first) wife, Margaret Hamilton.[6] There were at least seven children from this marriage:

Death

John Hamilton, Lord Bargany, died during April 1658.[14] His wife Jean survived him, dying in 1669.[15]

This profile is in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway Ancestor Patrick Houston and Magna Carta surety barons Richard de Clare and Gilbert de Clare that needs development by the Magna Carta Project. I will soon be adding the project as co-manager of this profile and will add a project box and project section to the biography. This profile still needs to be developed against the project's checklist. Thanks!
