Biography

Caspar Haldimann was born about 1650 in Signau, a village of the Emmental Valley in Canton Bern (Switzerland).

He married Margaretha Herrenschwander.

On April 1st 1671, he migrated from Thun to Yverdon a town north of Lausanne at the southwestern corner of Lake Neuchâtel, to work there as a cooper. [1]

He may have returned from time to time to his hometown of Signau : his son Bartlome Gottfrid was christened in Signau in 1677.[2]

In Yverdon he was charged 15 florins a year merely as resident, and not at once admitted to the full dignity of citizenship. In 1694, after a residence of 23 years, Caspar, who had changed is name to Honnête Gaspard Haldimand, having demonstrated his right to his name, paid down 2000 florins and wine, was received as a citizen (bourgeois), and his descendants inherited the distinction without question, wherever they might live or die. [3]

He had four sons : François Louis, Jean Louis, Barthelemy and Gaspard. [4]

Haldimand-1 and Haldimann-15 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate profile. Caspar was born as Haldimann and only changed his name to Haldimand after moving to western Switzerland.
