Biography

Daughter of Hugh Gwyn Esq. of Penarth and Jane (verch Owen) Gwyn, Sibyl was born in 1570 in Penarth, Carnarvonshire (now spelled: Caernarfon), in north Wales. In 1588 she married John ap Howel (aka Powell) from nearby Montgomeryshire. They lived in Llanwddyn, Montgomeryshire, Wales. They had at least 2 daughters:

1. Margaret Verch John (ap Howel), born 1596 in Penarth, Carnarvonshire, Wales. She married Ellis Williams. Two of their sons converted to the Quaker faith and emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1686.
2. Elizabeth Verch John (ap Howel), born 1593, in Llanwddyn, Montgomeryshire, Wales. She married Humphrey ap Hugh. Two of their sons, Owen Humphrey & Samuel Humphrey, converted to the Quaker faith and were persecuted for it in Wales. Both died in Wales but 3 of their oldest son's children emigrated to Pennsylvania as part of the Welsh Quaker migration.
