Biography

John Cloud Grubbs was born on the 26th of May, 1836 in Pine Township, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, United States. His parents were Susan Austin and John Cloud Grubbs.

The Grubbs family moved from Pennsylvania to Michigan and then later to Corvallis, Oregon. "John Cloud Grubbs went to what became Willimatte University and graduated with his brother Frank and sisten Margaretta in the first graduating class. He later went back to Michigan, attended Medical School, became a physician and returned to Oregon."[1]

"John Cloud (Grubbs), was a medical student and enlisted in the Union army during the Civil War, being assigned to scout duty on the staff of General Hooker ; while engaging in some delicate work necessitated by his duties he was shot and narrowly escaped capture, regaining the Union lines in safety; after the war he graduated M.D. from the University of Michigan and practiced in the west."[2]

After his service in the Civil War John C. Grubbs "made his way back to see "Relatives" in Pittsburg, PA. Then took a course in Chemistry, Pharmacy and Medicine in the Medical Dept. of the Univ. of Michigan. Then back home to OLD OREGON via the way of Isthmus of Panama."[3][4]

He married Madelia N. Nealley in The Dalles, Oregon on April 16, 1871. He was the father of Frank, Ilsie Elma, Eugenia Ethelwyn, Leroy, and Zea Genevieve Grubbs.

On the 10th of October, 1878 John C. Grubbs "drowned while on the river in a skiff, duck hunting. Though a good swimmer, when his boat overturned he was laden with a hunting vest filled with cartridges and heavy boots. His body was recovered a month later."[5]

The book talks of J. C. Grubbs during his Civil War days when he left Oregon, serviced with the UNION ARMy, made his way back to see "Relatives" in PITTSBURG, PA. Then took a course in Chemistry, Pharmacy and Medicine in the Medical Dept. of the Univ. of Michigan. Then back home to OLD OREGON via the way of Isthmus of Panama.[7][8]
