Joseph was born in 1923, the only son to Ernest Gordon and Josephine Redman.[1] Joseph grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He enlisted there in 1942, and attended the Tuskegee Air Pilot Program in Tuskegee, Alabama, graduating in Feb 1944. [2] He was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group.

On Aug 12, 1944, 2nd Lt. Joseph Gordon took off on an escort mission to bomb radar stations in Toulon, France. While in transit, his plane was hit by flak just outside Montepellier, in Lattes, resulting in the plane crashing into the ground. He did not survive the crash. His body was buried in the Lattes Cemetery. After the cessation of hostilities, the Graves Adminitration reinterred Joseph in the Epinal American Cemetery in Epinal, France. [3]
