Research Notes

"The identity of Neil Galbraith, considered by some to be the progenitor of all Sampson and Cumberland County Galbraith's and whose existence is doubted by others, is greatly clouded by confusing statements, and too many Neil Galbraith's in North Carolina's Cumberland County." John Rosser (pg. 5) [6]

This profile stated the following, with a citation for Wittel source but a search for McNeill finds no references. The pages about Neil Culbreth only mentions wife Martha Autrey.

The linked spouse Mary McNeil was born 1790 in Scotland and died 1819 at sea on the way to North Carolina. The information in the Wittel' state the family was in North Carolina between 1765 and 1797, based on land grants.

  • Margaret (Galbraith) Culbreth was born on March 02, 1770 in Scotland. She was the daughter of Neil Galbreath and Mary McNeil, and she died in 1825.

Gigha Island is an island off the west coast of Kintyre, Scotland. In the present day, it is referred to simply as Gigha or Isle of Gigha.[7]

The identity of Neil Galbreth, considered by some to be the progenitor of all Sampson and Cumberland County Galbreths and whose existence is doubted by others, is greatly clouded by confusing statements and too many Neil Galbreths. The first piece of evidence in favor of a Neil Galbreth residing in what was to become Sampson County from the 1740s is John C Bains statement. . . that Hugh Bain and a Williams (John) married Neil's daughters.[8]

The second and third pieces of evidence are two written statements made about 1890 by John Carouth Williams (1.8.1) at the age of 82. . .: 'My great grandfather John Williams came from Wales, a full blood Welshman. My great grandmother Williams was Katharine Culbreth, full blood scotch but born in America.' (Rosser, 1990, p. 5)

Have posted this on the Katherine Galbreth page as well, but note that I believe at least one profile representing a Neil Galbreth (lacking sources other than family retellings, unsourced Ancestry trees, etc.) whose likely dates were approximately 1700-1750 seems to have been merged into this 1740-1828 Neil Galbreth - I think we're of the consensus that the current non-existence of a profile for that elder Neil is not a problem since it's still pending any kind of documentation, but note that there have been at least two descendant errors thus far detected as a likely result of this merge and there may be other residual errors in bios and relationships - should be looked over and double-checked very carefully.

This "daughter" appears to be biologically illogical, and probably belongs to a different Neil Galbraith: Katherine (Galbreth) Williams (-aft.1798).

Hi Profile Managers,

I see that Neill Galbraith (Galbraith-1686) is connected as both the father and son of Angus Galbraith (Galbraith-1694). Given that Neill is shown as being born about 20 years after Angus, I assume he is meant to be his son -- and propose to disconnected him as Angus' father. Please let me know if you have any objections. Thank you!

Information from the Wittel source has been added to this profile, as well as Research Notes. 1st wife Mary McNeil, b 1790, d 1819 en route to North Carolina, does not seem to match to this profile who was in Carolinas in 1760s already. He married Martha Autrey in 1768 in North Carolina. There was a citation to Wittel for the marriage but searching the Wittel source did not find any reference for McNeil. The list of children in the 'biography' portion is not sourced and does not match either Find a Grave or Wittel source.
Galbreth-8 and Galbraith-1686 appear to represent the same person because: Same name. I didn't find a baptism record for him on either profile but Galbraith seems to be his early spelling. Same birth year and place. Same spouse, same marriage year. Same death year and place.

The para of his identify is repeated in both profiles. NO conflicting information.

I moved a research note regarding Martha Autry's children borne prior to her marriage to Neill to her profile page.
While not strong on direct sourcing, Mr Bundy and Mr Brooks at least were exhaustive in their research. Of particular note is an epic account of Neil Galbreath, given at a 1 Sep 1956 Cornelius Culbreth Clan Reunion by descendant Ernest Culbreth:

Neil (or probably Cornelius) Galbreath was a refugee from the Battle of Culloden, 1746. His friends kept him hidden from the English for seventeen years. During this time he learned the art of Tailoring, and when the vigilance of the British lapsed, he immigrated to settle in North Carolina about two miles northwest of what is now Roseboro, Sampson County. From there he built a business as a "Traveling Tailor" and enjoyed a clientele from Philadelphia to Charleston.

He was an old man at the time of the American Revolution. He had never been forced to take the "Tory Oath" and while he was coming home through Virginia, he was arrested by the British and accused of being a spy courier for the Patriots.

He, with Scottish patience, waited an opportunity and when the guard was in the right condition of insobriety, he broke two of the pilings in the stockade and came home.

He was aware that any refugee from the Culloden who had not taken the Tory Oath would be hanged on recognition, and, that accounts for the legend of his hiding in a collard patch when strangers approached his house.

His two sons, Sgt Archibald and Sgt Daniel were Revolutionary soldiers, his other sons being too young for military service.

Excerpt about Neil Galbreath, who was the father of the Cornelius Culbreth who married Lucy Frazier, found in

Chapter Ten, Section Eight: The Family of Cornelius Culbreth and Lucy Frazier, in Bundy, Vivian Mayo & Brooks, Robert Autry's The Descendants of Cornelius Autry, immigrant of Edgecombe County, and Neil Culbreth of Sampson County, North Carolina: and allied families. Second edition. 1996, p. 1024. Charlotte, NC: Herb Eaton Historical Publications.

It is slow-going to review this electronic text, so I do not know if he appears in an earlier chapter with a discussion of his wive/s and children, but I expect that he will.

Pick up a copy of Coharie to Cape Fear by John Rosser (Cumberland County, North Carolina genealogist), pg 7. You can also find this at familysearch.org. Rosser explains the many problems in identifying Neill Galbraith and his children. There is certainly a Neill Galbraith in the 1790 census, but I don't think he immigrated in 1790. Of course, because of the three or four Neill Galbraith in Cumberland County, North Carolina I could be wrong. So we're still searching for correct dates
posted by Jo Grasso
The dates of the children by each partner should be specified on the profile to ease reconciling what is an apparent problem: many of the children of the second marriage have impossible birth dates (as shown on the profile). So, some sort of overinclusion has occurred, or else the wrong dates (or wrong children) are attributed. Consider also attributed (described in the profile) versus attached: attached children should be able to be reconciled in terms of vital dates, at least.

On the other hand, pay close attention to whether Wittel is correct - at minimum, his birth date should be "about," because we have no direct evidence to cite regarding a birth or baptism date.

There is conflicting information on this profile. One statement says that Neil immigrated to North Carolina in 1819 from Canada, but records indicate that he arrived in North Carolina in the 1790s. Are these the same Neil Galbraith/Culbreath?
Thanks to David for pointing out the duplicate. The spouses are duplicate, between the two profiles, too. It's a work in progress, but we'll get through it. I went ahead and cleaned-up the extraneous GEDCOM-related and user-tree related material that was not needed in Culbreth-38, so it will be easier to complete the process.

Once that's all done, and the duplicate wives are done, then another merge or two will be needed, downstream, but like I said, it's a process. Thanks!

Culbreth-38 and Galbraith-1686 appear to represent the same person because: It seems clear that these records represent the same person and that the name at birth in Scotland was Galbraith.
