Biography

Frederick Funderburg is a part of US Black heritage.

Frederick Funderburg was born in 1889,[1] the eldest son of George Funderburg and Ophelia Hugley. He attended Talladega College and Shaw Universities before receiving his M.D from Meharry Medical College in 1921. That same year, he married Ethel Westmoreland, and by 1940, they had five children.

Ethel passed in 1959. In 1969 Frederick married his second wife Marie Brown,[2] who died in 1982.

Frederick was the first African American to practice medicine in Monticello. He maintained his practice for 50 years. He belonged to the American And Georgia Medical Societies, NAACP, Masons, and Shriner organizations. He passed in 1987 after a long illness following hip surgery. [3][4][5] He is buried in South View Cemetery in Atlanta.[6]

His eldest son 1st Liet Frederick Funderburg First Lieutenant Frederick Funderburg was a Tuskegee airman who died while on a mission in Italy. (He continues to be Missing in Action.)
