Biography

Peter was born in 1767 in Piscataway in the New Jersey Crown Colony. He was the son of Nehemiah Fitz Randolph and Phebe Wooden. He married Phebe Blackford in 1793. They settled in Mt. Bethel, New Jersey and had three children together. Peter passed away in 1815.

Surname note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members in the family where Peter is a child and where he is a father as their middle name as if part of their surname: In some censuses, the family is recorded using FitzRandolph or Fitz Randolph. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph as Last Name at Birth for Peter, his siblings and father. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in the Peter Fitz Randolph family in legal documents and when births were recorded.) • Fitz Randolph genealogy reports his mother as Nehemiah's second wife, Sarah, but in a death record for Peter's sibling, Elkanah, the mother is reported as Nehemiah's first wife, Phebe Wooden.

Also, his birth in Dec 1767 and his mother's death that same month suggest that she died in childbirth or due to complications.
