David was born in 1839 to Louisa LaRue and Joseph Wilson Finley, in southwest Callaway County, Missouri. David's middle name was Doak (a maternal family name several generations back) and identical to his grandfather's name, per his granddaughters, public school teachers and genealogists Florence Finley Loyd and Gertrude Finley McCaw. David served in the US/Union Army during the US Civil War. He married 3 times, first to Matilda Johnson, son of Callaway County judge and US Army Captain JJP Johnson, owner of what was later called Callaway Hills Farm. Matilda died shortly after her marriage to David, who subsequently remarried to Matilda's sister, Belinda Ellen Johnson, the mother of all his children. Following Belinda/Ellen's death, David again married to Adeline E Fleming, a sister of his daughter-in-law. Adeline raised his youngest children through adolescence. David passed away in 1920, in his native southwest Callaway County, within 10 miles of the Missouri River and the state capital of Jefferson City.
