Birth & Parents

On 9 March 1893 in Manchester, Chesterfield, Virginia, Bertha Ann Faison was born, the 1st known child of 3 known children born to James Madison Robert Faison, (2 Oct 1866 - Unknown) and Sarah Frances Cordle, (14 Feb 1861 - 25 Mar 1936) of Richmond, Virginia.

On 12 Nov 1891 in Richmond, Virginia, James M. R. Faison married Sarah Frances Cordle. Together James and Sarah Faison had 3 known children, a daughter and a son, and an infant son, all of whom were born in Manchester district, Chesterfield County, Virginia. Father Abandons Family

Sometime between 1902 and 1905 James M. R. Faison abandoned his wife, Sarah, and his two children. For years Sarah thought that James had moved to Akron, Ohio, that is why in April 1927 and again in 1934 the Chancery Court of Richmond, Virginia, required her to publish in the Akron newspapers notice that she was suing for divorce (April 1927) and declaring him dead (1934).

Marriage to Richard Herbert Brooks

On 30 June 1914 at the home of Rev. E. T. Smith, Swansboro, South Richmond, Virginia, Bertha Ann Faison married Richard Herbert Brooks, son of Cincinnatus Brooks and Eliza Thomas Fuqua.

“Wed in Swansboro Today. Miss Bertha A. Faison and R. H. Brooks both of Swansboro, were quietly married this morning at the home of the Rev. E. T. Smith, in Swansboro, in the presence of a number of relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks left on the 12:35 train over the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad this afternoon for a visit to the Eastern Shore and a tour of Northern cities.
