Biography

Elizabeth E Evans was born on 9 October 1834 in England. She married Edward Ellis in Summit County, Ohio during 1855. They had at least five children, Robert Charles, 1856; Minnie C., 1857, Nettie Marie, 1858, Ada B, 1860; and Walter C., 1861.

Elizabeth Ellis served as a nurse during the US Civil War. She worked at Woodward US Army hospital located near Cincinnati, Ohio for 15 months until she retired after becoming ill. Her husband enlisted with the 115th Ohio Infantry regiment, was captured by Confederate forces and was a prisoner of war. He was released in a prisoner exchange at Vicksburg, Tennessee, but died before arriving home in a steamboat boiler explosion.

Later, Mrs. Ellis moved to Westfield, Indiana and was matron of an orphanage. She died in Westfield and was buried in Summit Lawn Cemetery there.

Research Notes

• Census records of her son Robert Charles Ellis record his mother's nativity as Wales. It is quite possible that Elizabeth was born in Wales and not England.
• Her daughter Nettie Ellis/Wink wrote the description of Elizabeth's nursing service published in Holland's, Our Army Nurses.
