She was a nurse during the US Civil War. After the war, Mary compiled and edited "Our Army Nurses", a book about the experiences of many women who served as nurses during the war. The book consists of letters written by the nurses about their experiences.
In her narrative, she mentions seeing to her nephew, William K. Nason of Maine, the son of Mary's sister, Sarah June (Holland) Nason. Miss Holland writes about working in Columbia College Hospital, Seminary Hospital, and Lincoln Barracks Hospital in the Washington, D. C. area as well as at Annapolis in all about fourteen months beginning in the Spring of 1864. She also mentions working with Rebecca Wiswell and Aunt Becky during her service.
She passed away in November 1895 at her home in West Somerville, Massachusetts.
