Edward Ellis was born on 5 April 1832 in Pennsylvania, United States. Edward married Elizabeth Evans during 1855 at Summit County, Ohio. They had at least two children, Charles Robert, born 1856, and Nettie Marie, born 1858, who grew to maturity.

Private Edward Ellis was a Prisoner of War during United States Civil War.
During the US Civil War, Edward enlisted with Company C, 115th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was captured by Confederate forces in December 1864 at Lavergne, Tennessee, and was placed in Cahaba and Andersonville prison camps. Private Ellis was released in a prisoner exchange at Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 19, 1865, but tragically died on April 27, 1865 in the Sultana Disaster near Memphis, Tennessee before reaching his Ohio home.
