Biography

Alice (Emery) Chater immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Alice Emery was the daughter of John Emery and Alse Grantham of Romsey, Hampshire, England. Her father came to New England on the ship James in 1635, settling at Newbury, Massachusetts. [1] Her birthdate is uncertain, however, Alice was named in the February, 1622/3 will of her grandfather Walter Grantham. [2]

She married John Chater by 1644, as their first child was born at Newbury in August of that year. [1]

In December, 1653, Daniel Gun, servant to John Chater, testified about 18 months prior when John Chater was ill, Alice brought him sustenance and told him if her husband was dead, then Daniel should be her husband. [3] [4]
Alice entered Daniel's bed, and later accused him of criminally assaulting her. The court found Daniel not guilty, but punished both, Alice being tied to a whipping post for hour for her behaviour. [4]
In November, 1657, Alice was deposed in Newbury Court regarding a steer, branded by her husband John and brought to her father John Emery to be killed. Others testified that the steer belonged to Noyse and Chater had altered the brand. [5] [6]
On the same date, John Chater's two children testified about the steer. [6]

She is not named in her father John's will, dated May 1, 1680 [1] , so she likely died prior to that date.
