Biography

Robert Gurnie Edmonds was born on 8 Nov 1911 in Surry County, North Carolina to Frank Thomas Edmonds and Mary Lela Doby.[1] [2]

On the 1920 Census he was living with his parents and siblings in Dobson, Surry County, North Carolina. He had attended school.[3]

On the 1930 Census he was living with his parents and siblings in Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He had not attended school. He was able to read and write. His occupation was "spinner" in the "cotton mill" industry.[4]

In 1935 he was living in Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina.[5]

He was married to Lois Virginia Clapp (1915-1945) on 8 Apr 1939 in Danville, Virginia.[6] They had no known children.

On the 1940 Census he and Lois were lodgers in Jonhnson City, Washington County, Tennessee.[5]

He registered for the World War II draft on 16 Oct 1940 in Johnson County, Tennessee. He worked at Burlington Mills, Gloria Rayon Division. He was 5'6", 166 pounds, light complexion, brown hair, and light eyes.[7]

His wife Lois died in 1945. He remarried to Mary Ruth Blevins on 1 Jul 1949.[8]

On the 1950 Census he was 38 years old and lived with his wife Mooresville, Iredell County, North Carolina. His occupation was "foreman preprative" in the "rayon textele" industry.[9]

He passed away on 8 Nov 1911. His death location is not known, but he was living in Valley, Chambers County, Alabama when he died.[10] He was buried at Marseilles Cemetery in Westpoint, Troup County, Georgia.[11]

Obituary

Robert Gurnie Edmonds, 73, of Shawmut, died Friday at Lanier Memorial Hospital, Langdale.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Springroad Christian Church, Lanett, with burial in West Point (Ga.) Cemetery, according to Johnson-Brown Service Funeral Home.
Mr. Edmonds was born Nov. 8, 1911, in North Carolina, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Edmonds. He was a member and elder of Springroad Christian Church and retired from Shawmut Mills in 1974.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth L.; a daughter, Pat Brooks of Shawmut; two sisters, Marjie Coe and Gladys Stewart, both of Burlington, N.C.; two brothers, William Hal Edmonds of Graham, N.C. and Rufus Frank Edmonds of San Mateo, Calif; a grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may go to Springroad Christian Church.[12]
