Biography

1776 Project
Private Isham East served with Surry County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Isham East is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A132178.

Isham East was born February 4, 1758, in Lunenburg county, Virginia (established in 1746). Before the American Revolutionary War, the portion of Lunenburg county where Isham lived became Bedford county, Virginia. (see research notes). Isham enlisted as a Private during the Revolution and served with Captain Salathiel Martin, Captain Edmund King, Captain John Burkley, Captain Clement, and Captain William Deeks, under the command of Colonel Cleveland, Colonel Martin Armstrong, Colonel Charles Lynch and Colonel Perkins. [1]

Isham East is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A132178. DAR records indicate that Isham died January 19, 1835, in Patrick county, Virginia and that his wife's name was Mary (her maiden name not given) Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his son, William East, who married Mary "Polly" (?nee); and of his daughters, Sarah East, who married Abraham Eads; Ursley East, who married James Nunn; and Mary East, who married Asa Riddle. [2]

We derive Isham's parentage from the pension application papers of Isham East, 1758-1835. [3] According to his testimony, he was living in Bedford County and "in the winter of 1777 (William of Bedford sold land in Halifax in January, 1778) he went to Surry County, North Carolina to see his father who had moved to that county." Isham served in the Revolution with a group from North Carolina and when he returned to Bedford, he volunteered with a group from Halifax led by Captain Edmund King. He returned to Bedford and then in 1783 he moved to Surry County, North Carolina, now Stokes County. William had moved to Grayson by 1797 when he was named in a deed in Stokes as "William East of Greason (sic) Co. VA" He was selling his land in Stokes to Isham. [4] Isham moved to Patrick County, Virginia in 1801. In the Bible record submitted by his son as proof of the birth dates of the children, Isham is named as the son of William and Mary.

Researchers Notes

Lunenburg county, Virginia was originally was part of Brunswick County which was established during the reign of George II of England. Lunenburg County is proudly and historically known as the “Mother of Counties.” After being formed from Brunswick on May 1, 1746, Lunenburg went on to provide territory for the formation of nine other counties after 1753-Charlotte, Patrick and Henry-hence, the title, “Mother of Counties.” The first Lunenburg Courthouse was located in what is now Mecklenburg County.

Bedford County was established by European Americans on December 13, 1753 from parts of Lunenburg County. Later in 1756, a portion of Albemarle County lying south of the James River was added.
