Biography

Joseph Cannon East was born July 7, 1744, in North Carolina, a son of William East and Mary Cannon. Joseph married Martha Cockerham.

"Joseph was in the 1790 Stokes Co census, living close to Isham East, William East, and Thomas East, in the same neighborhood as William Venable and his wife Ursula East. It did not happen that all of these familiar names had moved from Surry Co to Stokes Co in the years between the 1784-1787 state census, and the 1790 federal census; what had happened was that Stokes Co was created out of Surry Co in 1789, and these families had lived in the eastern portion of Surry Co which became Stokes Co. In Joseph's home in 1790 were two males age 16 or older (Joseph and son John H), one male under age 16 (Joseph C East Jr), and six females (wife and five daughters). Joseph had four known daughters, which would account for four of the five females in his home, in addition to his wife. Perhaps a daughter had died before marriage, and we have no record of who she was. The nearby Isham East was Joseph's brother; and the William East next to Isham was the father of Joseph, Isham, and Thomas. Brother Thomas lived seven doors from Joseph in 1790."

"In 1800, the census was arranged alphabetically (somewhat), so we cannot actually see who was living close by. But in the same county was Thomas East Jr & Sr, Isham East, Asa East, and William Venable (husband of Ursula East). In 1800, Joseph was age 45 or older. He married Martha Cockerham about 1776, probably in VA. She was born about 1755 in Halifax Co, daughter of Daniel Cockerham and Martha _____. Both Joseph and Marsha were not found after 1800, and probably died in Stokes Co NC before 1810. In December 1800 in the inventory record of Benjamin Cannon deceased, Joseph East bequeathed to Benjamin's widow Mary and her heirs when Benjamin Cannon's youngest children became of age, if Mary has not remarried."
