James, the son of Thomas Duncalf and Hannah (Broadhurst) Duncalf, was born within the district of Congleton, Cheshire. His birth was registred in the first quarter of 1850.[1][2] He was baptised at Astbury, Cheshire on 24 March 1850.[3]
At the time of the 1851 Census, he was with at Mill Stree, Congleton with his parents and older brother, John.[4]
James married Julia Ann Shaw (1850-1881) at St Stephen, Congleton on 7 January 1873, at the age of 23 years.[5] They had two children:
In 1881, James, aged 31 years, and Julia were at Antrobus Street, Congleton with two sons and a visitor, Mary Ledward (age 17) was with them. James was working as a Draper's Assistant.[6]
On 27 September 1883, James, aged 33 years, married Mary Ledward (who had been visiting with James and Julia in 1881) at St Jame, Congleton.[7] James and Mary had 6 children:

At the time of the 1891 Census, James and Mary were at Pillory Street, Nantwich, Cheshire with their four children. Jane Ledward, Mary's sister, was with them. James was a Publican.[8]
James passed away in 1892, aged 42 years. His death was registered in Nantwich.[9]
