Biography

James was born in Congleton, Cheshire in 1849.^[1]

At the time of the 1851 Census, James was in Congleton with his parents and siblings.^[2]

By the age of 12 years, James was working as a Silk Winder.^[3]

At the time of the 1871 Census, aged 21 years, he was with his parents at St Werbergh, Derbyshire. He was working as a Joiner.^[4]

James married Mary Ann Lear (1851-1883) in 1875. Their marriage was registered within the district of Dartford, Kent.^[5] They had 2 children:

1. Kate Lear Duncalf (1877-1956)
2. Henry William James Duncalf (1881-1881) - died in infancy

In 1881, James, aged 32 years, and Mary were living at 18, Picardy Street, Erith, Dartford, Kent with their 4 year old daughter, Kate Lear Duncalf. James was working as a Carpenter and Joiner.^[6]

Mary died in 1883, aged 31 years.

James married Gertrude (Leader) Sutton (1856-) in 1889. The marriage was registered in the district of Hackney, Middlesex.^[7] James and Gertrude had four children:

1. Mabel Gertrude Duncalf (1890)
2. Bertha Louise Duncalf (1895)
3. Percy Irvin James Duncalf (1898)
4. Lilian Duncalf (1899)

At the time of the 1891 Census, James, aged 41 years, and Gertrude were at 53 Piccardy Street, Erith, Dartford.^[8] Two children from Gertrude's first marriage were with them:

1. George W.S. Duncalf, aged 9 Years, born Brighton Sussex, formally known as Frederick William Sutton.^[9]
2. Frederick R.S. Duncalf, aged 7 years, born Portsea Island, Hampshire, formally known as Frederick Robert Sutton.^[10]

The initial "S" given to both children should possibly have been a "J" if they had been given James Christian name as well as his surname? This would follow the pattern of the name given to James' son from his first marriage.

James and Gertrude daughter was also with them:

1. Mabel Gertrude Duncalf (1890)

James' children from his first marriage are not listed.

James Passed away in 1900, aged 49 years.^[11][12]

Research Notes

• Care is needed! There was another James Duncalf (1850-) born in Congleton (mother's maiden name Broadhurst) and yet another born in 1851, a James Mills Woolfenden (mother's maiden surname Buckley). From the marriage onwards, two sets of records have been found. The two can only be distinguished by the marriage record of James Duncalf (1850-), which gives his father's name, and the 1881 Census in which one is 32 years old and the other 31.
