Thomas was born at Congleton, Cheshire in 1877, the son of James Duncalf and Julia Shaw.^[1]

At the time of the 1881 Census, Thomas (aged 3 years), was with his parents and brother, Arthur (aged 5 years), at Antrobus Street, Congleton. They had a visitor, Mary Ledward (age 17).^[2]
