Biography

daughter of the Dean Of Moray

Margaret was born about 1600. She was the daughter of Thomas Dunbar and Grizel Crichton. She passed away after 1651.

Margaret married John GRANT 4th of Rothiemurchus, son of Patrick GRANT of Muckerach, later of Rothiemurchus and Jean GORDON of Gight. (John GRANT 4th of Rothiemurchus was born about 1577 and died about 1651.)

Margaret next married William MACKINTOSH, son of the laird of Borlam.

Disputed Information

According to: 'The Book of Burgie' by Rev. James G. Murray of Rafford, printed in Edinburgh for private circulation in 1930.

A William Mackintosh of Strone and Gask married a Margaret Dunbar, as her second husband. Stirnet, on their Dunbar04 page, adds that this William is "son of the laird of Borlam", although other websites don't seem to add that tidbit.

All of the websites that share this marriage info agree that Margaret's first husband was John GRANT 4th of Rothiemurchus, son of Patrick GRANT of Muckerach, later of Rothiemurchus and Jean GORDON of Gight. (John GRANT 4th of Rothiemurchus was born about 1577 and died about 1651.) They go on to say that Margaret next "married William MACKINTOSH of Strone and Gask. (William MACKINTOSH of Strone and Gask was born about 1595.)"

However, according to A.M. Mackintosh, William of Strone and Gask had already died by 1648. Additionally, that William was not the William "son of the laird of Borlam".

There was a William "of Borlam" Mackintosh who could have been born early enough, but he's listed as having passed even earlier, around 1630. Instead, A.M. Mackintosh states on pg 378., that William's fourth son "William; m. Margaret Dunbar, dau. of Thomas Dunbar, Dean of Moray, and widow of John Grant, 2nd of Rothimurcus."

At this point, it seems "The Book of Burgie" conflated two different William Mackintoshes that A.M. Mackintosh managed to keep separated nearly 30 years earlier.
