Samuel (Sam) Dumas was born 1874, in Magnolia, Columbia County, Arkansas, to Jane Dumas and an unknown father. Five of Jane's children were identified in the Census for 1880, in the home of "Step-Father," Frank Dumas. Unlike his other siblings, Sam was a Mulatto while they were classified as Black. This would imply that he perhaps had a different father. His brother, Rufus Dumas, was also a Mulatto.[1]
