Biography

Rufus (Duma) Dumas is a part of US Black heritage.

Rufus Duma [Dumas] was born in 1870, in Magnolia, Columbia County, Arkansas and was found in the 1880 Census of Magnolia, Arkansas which was taken on June 1, 1880. In addition to the Head of House, Several of the people listed are listed as a Servant at age 10, with no other association indicated. It is almost certain that the "s" was omitted from his surname. ^[1] Two houses away in Household # 45, was another servant girl named Alie Dumas, age 10, who may have been his sister or another relative.

Several days later, on June 4, 1880, Rufus was at home with his Mother, Jane Dumas, and his Step-Father, Frank Dumas, when the Census Taker came to their house. Obviously he recorded Rufus' and Alice's names a 2nd time in several days in the same community. The first effort he recorded Rufus Duma, mispelling his surname, age 10, a Servant. This time it was spelled correctly. ^[2]
