Anna Elisabeth Dodderer was born 25 December 1709 in the Duchy of Baden (Germany) and baptized the next day at the Lutheran Church in Stebbach.[1] She was the daughter of Georg Philip Dodderer and Veronica Unknown. She was called Anna in her baptism record, the wills of both her parents, and on her gravestone.
Anna immigrated to Pennsylvania with her parents and siblings sometime after the birth of her younger brother, Conrad, in September 1712,[2] but before December 1722, when her father bought 100 acres of land in an area of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania which later became Frederick Township in Montgomery County.[3] The deed identified him as a carpenter living in the area known as Falkner's Swamp.
Anna married Hans Michael Zimmerman about 1731 in Philadelphia County. He died around February or March of 1740. His exact burial place is unknown but is assumed to be in what's now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In his will, he appointed his brother, George, and Anna's brother, Bernhart, as guardians of Anna and their five children.[4] A land patent he had entered before his death was later issued to his two surviving sons.[5]
Anna remarried to Jacob Kurr (1712-1797) on 2 July 1741 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Red Hill, Philadelphia (Montgomery) County, Pennsylvania,[citation needed] and had several more children with him, of whom only two daughters survived until adulthood. Anna's father’s will, written and probated in late 1741, mentions the children Anna had "by her first husband."[6] Anna's children were also mentioned in her mother's will, which was probated in 1752.[7]
Anna's son, Michael, from her first marriage died in Lincoln County, North Carolina before 27 January 1762, when letters of administration were granted to her second husband, for Michael's remaining property in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. In the estate documents, Anna is referred to as "Anna Elizabeth Zimmerman, mother of [the deceased]" who had "intermarried with" Jacob Kurr.[8]
Anna died 28 August 1779 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (from which Montgomery County was formed in 1784). Anna's second husband, Jacob, survived her until March 1797.[9] They are both buried at Boehm Reformed Church Cemetery in Blue Bell, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.[10] The inscription on Anna's gravestone reads (German original on left, English translation provided for your convenience on right):
