It appears to me that John Dickinson of Carteret Co., NC, was the son of Charles Dickinson (d. 1740 South Kingstown, RI) by his second wife Philippa Greene, daughter of John and Ann (Almy) Greene. John married Mary Phillips, daughter of Samuel Phillips, in 1719 or so. He was a merchant at Coweset, near Warwick, and also was at Newport. He seems to disappear from Rhode Island at the time he appears in North Carolina.
The Newport records show that he had sons Samuel and John; other records also show sons Charles and Christopher. The NC John had a son John, and apparently a son Charles. However, it appears that he had a son James and there seems to be no record of a Samuel there. If you can reconcile James with Samuel, there would be no problem with identity. It seems that the widow and daughters went back to RI (she remarried and died in 1790). My line is through Charles's son Samuel. I haven't looked into a Samuel Dickinson born in 1720 who lived in the South. John Dickinson, born in RI abt 1699, maybe the son of Charles Dickinson and Phillip Greene. John Dickinson seems to have had a son Charles, born abt 1735/6 of RI who had a son Charles, born abt 1762, who is my ggggg grandfather. John may have died in 1736 or he moved to NC.
In all likelihood, the John Dickinson who shows up in Carteret Co NC was the same John Dickinson who was in Rhode Island until 1736 or 1737. John Dickinson was a merchant in Newport and Warwick, RI. The last deeds in his name appear in 1736 or 1737 (can't remember which), and he was in financial trouble. Clearly what happened was that he left RI in order to avoid his creditors. He died in the 1750s. Then his widow Mary went back to Rhode Island with some of the daughters, where they married. As to this Charles Dickinson Jr do you have any more information on him? Mary Phillips was the daughter, if I recall, of Samuel Phillips, and she left a will in 1780.
