Biography

Samuel Dean was born Sept. 25th, 1799 in Loudoun Co., VA. Samuel is identified in the Isaac Constant family Bible. Isaac's wife Amy Dean was an older sister of Samuel Dean. Samuel married Sarah Hughes in Flemingsburg, Fleming Co., KY on August 26th, 1824[1]. The marriage record is in the Flemingsburg courthouse. Samuel and his brother-in-law Jacob Hughes purchased 140 acres of land from Jacob's father, Thomas Hughes, in 1831, and 56 acres from the estate of Simon Kenton in 1838. They then sold the land at a substantial profit and moved to Owen County, IN. According to the Owen County Assessors book for 1846, Samuel owned 240 acres in what was then Montgomery Twnship, now Taylor Township. Samuel, his brothers Robert and John all arrived in Owen County, IN in the mid to late 1830's. In 1859 Samuel's sister Mathilda Dean Washburn and her husband also moved to Owen County. In a Day Book of a merchant in Gosport, IN was recorded the sales of each day from December 1855 to May 1856. On January1, 1856 Samuel purchased 3 1/4 ounces of tobacco for eighty-one cents and on January 19th bought one pair of boots for $4.50. In the mid 1830's Asbury College (Methodist based), eventually became Depauw University located in Greencastle, IN, began selling "perpetual scholarships" for $100.00. That scholarship entitled one person "free tuition" to attend the college. I have found references in the Will's of Robert and John Dean that their "perpetual scholarship" was for the education of their children. I have not found such a reference in the Will of Samuel Dean for his children. In 1858, Samuel, his brother Robert, Samuel's son Isaac, and daughter Amanda all died within months of one another. My best guess is either influenza or cholera were the likely cause of each of their deaths. Samuel's son-in-law James Allison Lyon purchased Samuel's land from his heirs. Samuel, his wife Sarah Hughes Dean, son Isaac, infant daughter Amanda, married daughter Rebecca Margaret Dean Lyon and husband are all buried on privately owned land in a cemetery known as the Lyon/Dean cemetery. The headstones were cleaned, repaired and leveled in the fall of 2016. At the death of Samuel's wife Sarah in 1880 her possessions were distributed to her living children. Her son William Hughes Dean (my 2nd great grandfather) acquired her family Bible. I have never been able to find that Bible. Samuel's daughter Elizabeth Jane Dean Jones died in 1912 in Kokomo, Indiana. Her obit stated she had written a story of her parents lives, and kept a journal of her life. I have never been able to find those documents.
