Biography

Enoch was born on 18 May 1828^[1], probably in North Carolina which was seen on the 1870 and 1910 US Census^[2][3][4][5] (See research notes)

On 1 Jul 1863, Enoch was 36, working as a farmer, and living in Afton, DeKalb, IL when he registered for the US Civil War Draft.^[4]

Enoch and Cynthia Ann (Woods) Darnell (1823-1903) most likely married prior to 1857 (the year their daughter [[Catherine Agnes Darnell (1857-1858}]] was born)^[6].

The 1860 US Census shows Enoch Darnell (32) and Cynthia Ann Darnell (33) and 1 year old Newton Darnell (1858-1930) living in the Afton, DeKalb, Illinois household of Sylvester Richmond (living with a 1 year old Amelia Jane Rickmond at the time). It does not specify the circumstances or relationships of the household members but does support the probable marriage of Enoch and Cynthia. It appears to also substantiate that Enoch was from NC and Cynthia was from Pennsylvania. An additional boarder, Ebenezer Landers (1832-1907) (25), farm laborer, was also part of this household.^[7]

In 1870 he and Cynthia are living in Sycamore, DeKalb County, IL with their two sons, Newton (11) and Willis Darnell (abt.1865-1937) (4). He is running his own farm near the Adin Potter farm.^[2]

Enoch passed away on 12 Nov 1878 in Sycamore, DeKalb County, Illinois and was buried at the Ohio Grove Cemetery in Cortland, DeKalb, Illinois^[1].

1. If you have a substantiating record that distinctly shows Ashe County, NC, please collaborate and/or add a link to the source so that this issue can be resolved.

Records show Enoch born in at least 3 different states. We obviously have unsubstantiated assumptions running rampant.

NC according to 1870 and 1910 US Census and the IL, Death Index for son Newton and US Civil War Draft Registration is most likely, but not yet proven. The 1860 US Fed Census show SC^[7]. Monroe County, IN has also been seen as his place of birth with no substantiation ... and appears to have disappeared from previous citings). Some relatives are using Ashe County, NC with no substantiation.

Parents came from NC, Oldest sibling Polly (Darnell) Schneider (1826-1845) b in NC, next sibling after Enoch b in IN.

MARRIAGE: No marriage record has been found Need Marriage Record

Other sources added to support a marriage, but the actual marriage record is still needed in case anyone is up to the task of finding.

Note that Cynthia A Woods (26), using her maiden name, was living in the household of [[[Darnell-447|John Darnell Jr. (abt.1831-1903)]] (30) in Little Rock, Kendall, Illinois in 1850. I have not found Enoch Darnell on any 1850 Census, but in 1860 he was living with Cynthia in Afton, DeKalb, Illinois, so I expect that they were married either in DeKalb County or Kendall County or an adjacent county close to Plano, Kendall or Sandwich, Little Rock, or Squaw Grove (all in DeKalb County) where most of the Darnell family lived at the time.

I expect that all three were in Illinois at some point in their lives - in case anyone wants to create and link profiles. At this point in time, I do not see a relationship to the Richmond family other than location of residence.

3. Amelia Jane Richmond, b 28 Nov 1857 in DeKalb County, IL; died 9 Jan 1932 in Bradley, Kankakee, IL. Married Wm J Shear; 2 children. Then married Abrim Clark (1841-1922), 5 children.
4. BROTHER: John Darnell Jr. (abt.1831-1903). John was Cynthia's brother, John (b 19 Feb 1820 in PA, d 16 Jan 1854 in Kane County, IL. (I just realized he had profile and connected - but his profile needs to be updated and her's may need the update showing 1860 Census as well. All I did was link - I did not review after the link.)
