Lancelot was born in Milang, South Australia during 1898. He is the son of William Thompson Cowan and Mary Elizabeth Hooper. He passed away in Adelaide, South Australia during 1973.

Lancelot served in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War. He enlisted in Adelaide, South Australia on 14 December 1943. He was discharged on 5 February 1946 with the rank of Leading Aircraftman at RAAF Parafield.^[3]

Lancelot died in Adelaide, South Australia on 25 August 1973 at the age of 74 years.^[4]

Lancelot's remains were cremated and interred at the Centennial Park Cemetery in Pasadena, South Australia on 12 September 1973 with a funeral service being conducted on 28 August 1973.^[5][6]
