Biography

Margaret Colville is a member of Clan Colville.
Scottish flag
Margaret Colville was born in Scotland.
Margaret Colville lived during the medieval period.

Margaret was the daughter of Sir Robert Colvill of Ochiltree.

She married John Sempill[1] before 3 Oct 1479.[2] They had issue:

  1. William, 2nd Lord Sempill[3]
  2. Francis, sued by John Montgomery of Corscraig on 4 May 1502[3]
  3. Gabriel[3]
  4. Marian, contract to m. George Maxwell[3]
  5. Isabel, contracted to m. Robert Crawford of Greenock prior to 11 Mar 1503.[3]

Margaret died shortly after 21 Apr 1504, exact date and place unknown but certainly before 16 Feb 1505-06.[3] and was interred in the Collegiate Church in Lochwinnoch Park, Sempill, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Research Notes

  • Birth:
Margaret's marriage to John Sempill is estimated to have been prior to 1485 and with a minimum age of 12 for females to marry, her birth was prior to 1573.
  • Marriage:
The first born male child, William, had a first born male child, Robert, who is estimated to have been born before 1501 placing William's birth prior to 1486 and the marriage of Margeret to John Sempill prior to 1485. Her husband, John, was knighted on 10 Nov 1488 and one would expect he was of full age so born before Nov 1464 making him legally capable to marry before 1478.
  • Death:
Margaret died shortly after 21 Apr 1504 and it is left to the reader to interpret what shortly truly means. Her husband remarried on 16 Feb 150/56, so it is certainly under 22 months. Were there reason to believe that her five children were still young, it would not be unusual for a man to remarry almost immediately but their first born male was certainly of full age and it is likely all the cildren were at least at the age of discretion so one would expect that a year of mourning had been allowed placing Margaret's death between Apr 1504 and Feb 1505, a period of ten month or Sep 1504 +/- 5 months.

Death changed from slightly BEFORE to slightly AFTER 21 Apr 1504 to align with Scots Peerage p. 533. N.B. had to override conflict between her birth date and that of her first born in order to save. Will look into changing one of both of those.

Please update Margaret's birth date to "about" or before 1469, as her mother's birth date is noted at "about" 1451; thus, the latter estimate is more reasonable. For her grandmother, her death date was "about" 1451, so the indication that Eufame Wallace was born 1451 is likely just to align with her having been born by 1451/her mother being born in childbirth/soon thereafter. Or else, as I previously suggested: "Before" 1468 for the birth date of Margaret.

As it is, an audit error is being generated because her mother was too young to have had Margaret in 1455. Thank you.

It makes more logical sense to put her birth date at "before" 1468 (from the narrative), given that her mother's date of birth is 1450.

DeColville-1 and Colville-4 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same parents, same time frame, almost exact birth and death, place
Colville-30 and Colville-4 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same parents, same husband. The lower numbered one is now sourced.
