Biography

Humphrey Colles was born in 1585 and baptised at Corfe, Somerset on 28 July 1585. His parents were John Colles and Anne Thynne. ^[1]

In 1605 he was admitted to the Middle Temple, being described as the third son of John Colles of Barton, Somerset. Then in 1607 he was named in his father's will, again being described as "my third son".

In about 1615 he married Eleanor Carter. They had about nine children:

• Elizabeth

In 1625, Humphrey was named in the will of his father in law John Carter. ^[3]

At some stage, Humphrey came into possession of the Manor of Catteslade (sometimes called Chattreland or Castlet) in the Guiting Power area of Gloucestershire. He also appears to have had property at Chard in Somerset. In 1635, Humphrey, Eleanor and their son George were named in the will of Humphrey's brother George of Buckland. ^[4]

He died on 15 Nov 1661 and was buried on 18 Nov 1661, although the location is not known. ^[5]
