Biography

John was born about 1541.[1] He was the son of Humphrey Colles.[2] He had many roles within the county of Somerset including Escheator for Somerset and Dorset 1566-7; feodary for Somerset c.1570, Justice of the Peace by 1571, and Sheriff of Somerset 1578-9, 1597-8. [3]

In about 1570 he married Ann Thynne. She died in April 1588 and was buried at Pitminster, Somerset on the 9th of that month. [4] The parish register described her as "Mrs Colles, the wife of John Colles, esquire."

John and Ann had at least 6 children; the known baptisms took place in the church at Corfe, Somerset.

  • Dorothy
  • Elizabeth (1576)
  • John
  • Ann (1582)
  • George (1583)
  • Humphrey (1584)

In 1580 he was named as "son in law" in the will of Sir John Thynne of Longleat, Wiltshire. [5]

On 16 Feb 1596 he married Winifride Leigh, the illegitimate daughter of Sir Thomas Leigh and the widow of Sir George Bond, Lord Mayor of London. They were married at St Olave Old Jewry in London and the parish register described her as "the Lady Bond". [6]

John had his will drawn up on 14 Oct 1607. [7] He may have had puritan sympathies: at any rate he forbade mourning gowns at his funeral, or any ‘solemnity’ other than a sermon. He made bequests to:

  • wife
  • third son Humphrey Colles
  • cousin and godson Philippa Gifford
  • son (in law) Charles Courtenay
  • son John Colles
  • cousin Hugh Carterett and his wife Frances
  • overseers Sir Edward Phillips and brother Sir Henry Walrond.

He died on the 18 Feb 1607/1608 at Barton in Somerset, and was buried at Pitminster, Somerset on the 21 Feb a few days later. [8]

His will was probated on 8 Jun 1608. [9]
