John Coles II is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A024373.

John Coles, Colonel, furnished supplies, signed the Albemarle Declaration of Independence 21 April 1779.

John Coles inherited property in Goochland County from his father as a young child, in 1747. It was to Enniscorthy that Thomas Jefferson sent his family for safety when Monticello was raided by the British in 1780. County boundaries were later re-drawn, creating a new County of Albemarle in which John Coles acquired four additional grants of land amounting to 785 acres, bringing his estate to a total of 1830 acres, the estate becoming known as Estouteville, after an old Skipwith family name.

John Coles was a genial, horse-loving, hospitable Virginia gentleman who had thirteen children, ten who survived to adulthood, and was able to settle a portion of his estate on each child. [1]
