Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Cole III was a Maryland colonist.
William was a Friend (Quaker)

Origin

The birth of William Coale is recorded in the Monthly Meeting minutes of the West River Quaker church:

William Coale Jr. son of William & Ester Coale of Anne Arundel County born 21st day of the 7th month [September on Quaker calendar] 1655.[1] William was left a legacy in the will of his father and identified as born of ye body of Hester my wife to receive all my land known by ye name of Great Bonnerstone lying in West River.[2]

Marriage & Children

William married by 1685 Elizabeth Thurston, the daughter of the Quaker missionary, Thomas Thurston and the widow of George Skipwith which is proved by the entry of the birth of their first son which names her as the relict of Skipwith. William & Elizabeth were the parents of the following children whose births are recorded in Quaker minutes:

Wiliam Coale b. 17 of 2nd mo. 1686 d. 1687

Death

William wrote his will 24 June 1700. He mentions his brother Philip & Cassandra his wife, his brother William and his sister Eliza. the wife of Nathan Smith. His wife, Elizabeth was named the extx. and the will was probated on 24 June 1700.[3]

No children were mentioned in this will, but there must have been children because when the intention of Elizabeth Coale, widow and Samuel Chew to marry was mentioned in Quaker records in 1704, the meeting discussed the protection of the Elizabeth's children and their rights to property. One boy, named William is noted in Quaker records. He was born in 1686 & died in 1687. There was also a daughter named Cassandra who was living in 1704.[4]

Hi Hannah,

Thomas and his wives appear to need some help merging duplicates. And this profile could use a bit of tidying after previous merges. Need some help?
