Roberto Clemente was a professional baseball player who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Roberto Enrique Clemente was born in Barrio San Antón, Carolina, Puerto Rico in 1934. He was the youngest of seven children of Melchor Clemente and Luisa Walker.[1]
He was a baseball player who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. [2] He had 3,000 hits in his career for the Pirates. [3] In 1972, he managed a Puerto Rican team that went to the Amateur Baseball World Series in Nicaragua. Later in the year, the city of Managua was hit by a massive earthquake. He was concerned about the people in Nicaragua and wanted to help. He organized a committee to raise money and get other items, such as medicine and food, that could be sent to Nicaragua. On New Year’s Eve, he joined a plane as part of the rescue effort. He died when the plane crashed.
After his tragic early death[4][5], he was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. [6] His baseball accomplishments include Most Valuable Player, 15 times all-star, two World Series Appearances, 12 Gold Gloves, 4 times Batting titles, and World Series Most Valuable Player. [7]
Major League Baseball (MLB) annually awards the "Roberto Clemente Award" to the player who "best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team" [8] He is known for his service to humanity. He once said that he wanted “to be remembered as a ballplayer who gave all he had to give.” [9]
