Biography

Elizabeth (Cheney) Iiams is related to US President Harry S Truman. Here is the trail.

Name

Elizabeth Cheney is referred to as Eliza in her father's will (Doliante, p. 120) . Spellings varied widely at the time, and the surname is spelled "Cheiney" in that will. In Elizabeth's 1725/6 deposition referred to below, however, the name is spelled Cheney.

Other spellings of the name include Cheyney[1][2] and Chaney.

She may be found with a middle name at some locations on the internet, but without credible documentation as to source:

Elizabeth Ann
Elizabeth Densy

Birth

According to the Millennium File, Elizabeth Cheney was born October 30, 1652. This date does not appear in Sharon Doliante's extensive collection of original source materials. However, the discussion of dating her father Richard Cheney's arrival in Maryland suggests a date of late 1652.

If Elizabeth had been born prior to her parents' arrival in Maryland, they would have been entitled to land on her behalf. If they had arrived prior to June 20, 1652, they would have received 200 acres, 100 acres for each, but in fact they received 100 acres, 50 acres each. This establishes that they arrived after June 20, 1652, and Elizabeth had not been born at the time.

However, on January 26, 1725/6, Elizabeth made the following deposition:

  • "Elizabeth Iiams aged about Seventy four Years makes Oath that she heard that her father Richard Cheney had made a Will at Coll. William Burgess and that a certain William Cocks writ it and that she ye sd Elizabeth heard that her said Father Richard Cheney had left the Land he then lived upon to his two Sons Thomas & Charles and that She never heard that he made any other Will. The Said Elizabeth Iiams further Sayeth that She heard her Father had left her ye Sum of five Shillings but cannot remember She ever received it or ever demanded it and further Sayeth Not." [Testamentary Proceedings #27, ff 290-1, Hall of Records.] Doliante, p. 108
  • The date on the deposition was 25 January 1725/26. If she was born before 1 January her YOB would have been 1651. if she was born between 1 January and 15 March YOB would have been 1651/52.

Given these dates, her mother Charity Cheney was probably pregnant with Elizabeth when they arrived in Maryland. They settled in the South River Hundred of Anne Arundel County, which would have been Elizabeth's place of birth.

Marriage

Doliante (p. 108) notes that Elizabeth was married in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, before March 1, 1674/5, to William Iiams who died testate (when his name appears as "Eyoms"), before November 10, 1703 (date of probate of his 1698 will), Anne Arundel County. [3].

US and International Marriage Records gives a marriage date of 1669.

Elizabeth's husband may be the same William Ijams b. 1652, Stratton, Cornwall, England who died/was buried 29 July 1703 and was buried at All Hallows's Church, Anne Arundel County. This William Ijams was a planter in Anne Arundel County.

Her husband William inherited 400 acres from his father-in-law, Richard Cheney, south of South River. [4]

Children

Doliante (p. 108-109) lists the following children:

1. William Iiams, Jr, b. 1670's
2. Richard Iiams, b. 1670's
3. Elizabeth Iiams
4. George Iiams
5 Hester Iiams
6 Susannah Iiams

Death

Elizabeth's date of death is unknown. Suggested dates include:

  • before 10 Nov 1703, the probate date of her husband's will.[5][6]
  • 23 JUN 1699[citation needed], Place: Anne Arundel Co., MD
  • 1726, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [7][8]
  • 1726 in Anne Arundel, MD[7][8]
