Biography

Most sources, including The Great Migration Begins[1] assumed Sarah was by the second wife of Edmund Chandler, but there is no reason for this assumption. The 1662 will of Edmund Chandler gave a bequest (of sugar in Barbadoes) to his daughters Sarah, Anna and Mary. He later gave a separate bequest to another daughter Ruth. Given the fact three of the daughters were named together, but a fourth daughter was named later is a weak indication that Ruth was by a different wife from the other three.

According to an article in the Winter 2022 Mayflower Descendant Sarah may have been Sarah (Unknown) Simmons (abt.1612-bef.1689), wife of of Moses Simonson (Simmons)[2] Moses Simmons was married in Plymouth sometime during the early 1630's (first child born ca 1635) so his wife would have been born circa 1614 or so. IF Sarah, wife of Moses Simonson/Simmons was the daughter of Edmund Chandler, then she (and likely her sisters Anna and Mary) would have been daughters of Edmund's first wife.

Research Notes

There are three possibilities for Sarah presented.

  1. Sarah was possibly the daughter of Edmund's second wife based on Anderson's book, and born in about 1638.
  2. Sarah was possibly the daughter of Edmund's first wife and born much earlier.
  3. Sarah was the wife of Moses Simmons.

Up until a recent merge, Sarah's birth date of 1638 was based on Anderson, but appears to be only an estimate and the book does not provide any proof of this date.

Since Edmund groups three daughters together in his will (Sarah, Anna, and Mary), and Ruth separately, it is possible they are from separate mothers.

Being unsure of who Sarah's mother was, I thought it made sense to remove the 2nd unknown as mother. I was not able to remove her mother since it is a project controlled profile.

I would suggest the following action:

  1. Remove Sarah's mother (Edmund's 2nd wife), until it can be determined which one is her mother.
  2. Document the conflicting sources.
  3. Have the children's profiles for this situation controlled by the Great Migration project and a decision be made on how this should be handled so it is handled consistently among all related profiles.

I tried to remove the 2nd wife as Sarah’s mother to eliminate the date error but was not able to since the unknown wife is project controlled. I have posted my thoughts in the research notes on Sarah’s profile. I think the project should control all of Edmund’s children’s profiles so that they can be treated consistently. The conflicting options have been noted on the profile so there needs to be a consensus on whether Sarah and the other children are attached to the first or second wife, or just disconnected from either wife until we have further information. I’m currently not yet a member of the Great Migration project, but may join at some point. I had adopted Sarah’s profile due to my Chandler ancestry. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Chandler-10234 and Chandler-3494 appear to represent the same person because: Edmund Chandler only had one daughter Sarah

Thanks. Looks like another large difference in birth dates from the two sources on each profile. I will review both sources plus look for additional sources before merging

Raymond,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree, and for your work about Sarah, including presumably Raymond T. Wing , "Sarah, wife of Moses Simmons of Duxbury: A Possible Parentage" Mayflower Descendant (2022) 70:42-46, cited I assume for the change in her birth from 1638 to 1614.

The change to her birth date has not been carried forward/integrated into the related profiles, so that Sarah Chandler, now said born 1614 is reported the daughter of Edmund Chandler (abt.1587-aft.1662) (PGM) and his first wife, Unknown (Unknown) Chandler (abt.1610-bef.1662) (PGM), triggering WikiTree Warning 305: Mother too young or not born.

Do you have objections to leaving all the comments in the narrative, but reverting the data field so that it reports her birth 1638?

If you do, then how should we go about resolving the claims impacting on the PGM profiles to address the WikiTree warning?

Thanks again for supporting WikiTree and for all your great work.--Gene

Edmund Chandler (Chandler-194) had two wives. We currently don't know the given or surname of either wife. His first wife is (Unknown)-291816 and his second wife is (Unknown)-291822. We need to change the mother of Sarah Chandler to (Unknown)-291816 and it would remove the warning about the age of the mother.

Hi Raymond,

In haste here, will have to pull some sources and elaborate.

I'm guessing we'll need a G2G on that, as we've been following Anderson.

Will edit this comment later to expand.--Gene

R.C. Anderson was one of the reviewers of my article before it was published in the "Mayflower Descendant" He agreed with the conclusion where there is no reason to believe Sarah was a daughter by a second wife. While he didn't believe there was enough evidence to meet the genealogical proof standard about Sarah being the wife of Moses Simmons, he agreed it was certainly possible and was perfectly okay with the "Mayflower Descendant" publishing this article in the way it was written.

In conclusion, while Sarah may or may not have been wife of Moses Simmons, the evidence does weakly support Sarah being a daughter of Edward Chandler's first wife over being a daughter of his second wife.

I have no objections to reverting the birth date to 1638 since this is closer to the dates shown also for Anna and Mary. While this removes the warning, there is still a lot of uncertainty on Sarah. Also, disconnecting the current unknown mother born about 1610 would make sense. Most of the research and notes on this issue were already here when the merge was completed and we’re not my research. I’m new to researching descendants of the Mayflower and GPM. My approach to this would be to document in a research notes section for Sarah the competing scenarios on her age, whether she’s a daughter to his first or second wife, or possibly one of his wives. It makes sense that she is in the same age range as Ann and Mary. After we document clearly the options then we can go to G2G to ask for additional input.

The text states that her birthdate is estimated as 1638. Why does the profile data section indicate a date of 1622?

Answered my own question. Sarah (Chandler) Leonard was born in Leyden in 1622. The date on this profile apparently results from confusion with her. I'll correct the birthdate.

Chandler-26 and Chandler-3494 do not represent the same person because: Different fathers. Each father had a daughter named "Sarah". Sarah Chandler-26 is Roger's daughter. Sarah Chandler-3494 is a duplicate of Edmund's daughter.
Chandler-26 and Chandler-3494 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same person...
