Biography

Edmund Chandler was born in England[1] by about 1587 (estimate of eldest child's birth).[2] Edmund died in Duxbury, Plymouth Colony, between 3 May 1662 (date of will)[3] and 2 June 1662 (date of inventory).[4][5]

Edmund married (1) by about 1612 (birth of child), _____ _____ (not named in any record). He married (2) by about 1632 (birth of child), _____ _____ (not named in any record).

Although the details of Edmund's birth and parentage are unknown or unproven, he was probably closely related to Roger Chandler (abt.1580-bef.1665). Both men appear in Leiden as sayworkers and came to Plymouth Colony about the same time; both removed to and died at Duxbury.[6] Both Edmund and Roger Chandler may have had a family connection to Nathaniel Chandler, noticed of Duxbury by 1643.[7] See Research Notes.

At Leiden

The first records about Edmund Chandler are given at Leden, Holland,[8] where he was at different times a sayweaver, draper and pipemaker.[9][10] He was first noticed there as a sayweaver on 11 November 1613 when he registered for citizenship, guaranteed by Roger Wilson and Henry Wood.[11][12]

Edmund himself stood as surety for the citizenship registration of three men between 1615 and 1626.[13]

  • John Keble on 27 April 1615[14]
  • Roger White on May 1623; Edmund was then reported a draper.
  • Edward Coolidge on 17 April 1626; Edmund was reported a pipemaker.

Then a resident of Nieuwestadt (New Town), a district within Leiden,[15] Edmund buried a child at St. Peters, 26 March 1619.[16][17] In 1628, Edmund Chandler was a witness to the will of Catharine Edmonds, wife of William Cubitt.[18]

Colonial Immigration

The details of Edmund's immigration are not known. In 1995, Robert Charles Anderson placed Edmund Chandler's immigration to Plymouth Colony, from Leiden, at 1632, writing, that, while no earlier record is shown, "he was probably [among] the last group of Leiden church members who came to Plymouth in 1629 and 1630." [19]

At Plymouth Colony

Edmund appears on the first Plymouth freemanship list,[20] dated "1633";[21] his name is found above those who became freemen on 1 January 1632/3.[22] He is again on the list dated 7 March 1636/7. Edmund's name appears in the Duxbury section of the 1639 and 1658 freemen's lists.[23]

Edmund was active in Duxbury affairs. He was one of several representing the town on a committee, 14 March 1635/6 for "the neaer uniting of Plymounth & those on the Duxburrough side."[24][25] Just later, Edmund served as town constable 3 January 1636/7[26] and 7 March 1636/7.[27][28] As a Duxbury representative, Edmund sat on a committee "dividing meadow," 2 October 1637.[29][30]

Edmund served on a trial jury, 7 June 1636[31] and twice on petit juries--1 September 1640 and on 5 October 1640.[32]

He served as Duxbury deputy to the Plymouth General Court on 4 June 1639, 29 August 1643 and 5 Mary 1643/4.[33][34]

On 23 January 1638/9, John Edwards was apprenticed to "Edmond Chandler, of Duxborrow, yeom[an]" for a period of five years.[35]

On 20 May 1637, Samuel Chandler was sued by John Jenney for a £20 debt. "Edmund Chandler became bail [and was to] satisfy the debt," which Edmund undertook to do on 2 October 1637.[36]

Edmund acquired and traded considerable parcels of land. See Edmund Chandler Land and Deeds. Two transactions in 1636/7 and 1637 are of note,[37]

  • On 2 January 1636/7, Edmund was granted 40 acres "on the east side of Moyses Symonson"; transactions mentions "Morris formerly began to clear for Mr. Bowman."
  • On 2 April 1638, Edmund was granted 60 acres (Duxbury), "on the northeast side of the lands granted to Moyses Symons."

Will

Edmund Chandler, then "old and weake in body: wrote his will 3 May 1662; it was proved 4 June 1662. The estate inventory, exclusive of real estate, was dated 2 June 1662.[38][39] The will names family members, as below. Edmund's wife is presumed to have pre-deceased him.

  • son Samuell Chandeler
  • son Benjamine Chandeler
  • son Joseph Chandeler (also executor)
  • daughters Sarah, Anna, and Mary,
  • child Ruth

To his daughters Sarah, Anna, and Mary, he bequeathed, “three thousand and five hundred of sugar which belonges to mee at Barbadoes.”

Not shown the son of John Chandler. Edmund's parentage is unknown or unproven. He was previously severed as the son of John Chandler and Jane Gitton. Neither the Great Migration Begins nor the Edmund Chandler Association support that John/Jane were Edmund's parent.s A posting to Ancestry Family Trees claims this set of parents have been disproved, Ancestry.com.

Not shown in 1633 and 1634 Plymouth tax lists. Robert Charles Anderson (1995) wrote, "Edmund Chandler does not appear in the 25 March 1633 and 27 March 1634 Plymouth tax lists, even though his age, wealth and social status would lead one to expect that he should," apparently otherwise citing "PCR 1:11, 28." While Edmund's name does not appear, Anderson goes on to report that the name Samuel Chandler is present, "and continue[s] though the 1683 estate records at Duxbury." Anderson goes on to present arguments and conclude that the Samuel Chandler so named was Edmund's son (as opposed to the same named son of Roger Chandler).[42]

Is Sarah Chandler aka Sarah (Unknown) Simmons (abt.1612-bef.1689)? That Edmund's daughter Sarah is the woman who married Moses Simmons is the subject of Raymond T. Wing, "Sarah, Wife of Moses Simmons of Duxbury: A Possible Parentage," Mayflower Descendant 70:42-46. See the profile comment by author and WikiTreer, Raymond Wing.

Not married to Elizabeth Alden. Elizabeth Alden, the granddaughter of Mayflower passenger John Alden (abt.1598-1687), was married to a different Edmund Chandler. She was born many years too late to have been a wife to this Edmund.

Prior version. In 2014, Becky Syphers added various helpful notes and references including, (a) "He had property in Barbados (sugar) and was a draper according to his will"; (b) Edmund arrived in Plymouth, MA in 1632 and may have married a second time in Barbados in 1633.

Assuming there are no objections, have begun to devise an approach to incorporating the important work by author and WikiTreer Raymond Wing.

In that process, discovered that several over long passages ("Timeline" and "Where did Edmund Chandler Originate from? by Dick Chandler, CFA Vice President) were copied here from The Chandler Family Association web site.

With that in mind, I plan to break the current work into three parts,

  • Remove over long passages extracted from The Chandler Family Association web site. (DONE)
  • Update the existing profile so that it incorporates the core information from those deleted passages and helpful comments by WikiTreer Bob Neely. (DONE)
  • Advance the profile by devising a way to incorporate the important work by author and WikiTreer Raymond Wing.

I authored an article in "The Mayflower Genealogist" (70:42-46) postulating where Sarah, wife of Moses Simmons was likely the daughter of Edmund Chandler. Edmund's 1662 will gave a bequest to three of his daughters (Sarah, Anna and Mary). Most researchers assumed they were likely unmarried daughters by a second wife. However, it is much more likely they were married daughters by his first wife.

Hi Raymond,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree, and for your work about Sarah, including presumably Raymond T. Wing , "Sarah, wife of Moses Simmons of Duxbury: A Possible Parentage" Mayflower Descendant (2022) 70:42-46.

As I have commented on the profile of linked daughter, Sarah Chandler, the change to her birth date (from 1638 to 1614) was not been carried forward/integrated into the related profiles. Her profile now reports she was born 1614, as Edmund;s daughter by his first wife, Unknown (Unknown) Chandler (abt.1610-bef.1662) (PGM), triggering WikiTree Warning 305: Mother too young or not born.

As suggested on Sarah's profile, might we either revert Sarah's birth to 1638 or find some other collaborative path forward so that we resolve the claims impacting on the PGM profiles to address the WikiTree warning?--Gene

Bob Neely has added excellent deep-dive research in his recent comments, following earlier contributors. The biography is in desperate need of organization and rewrite at this point. Bob, do you want to take that on?

Thank you for the vote of confidence. I currently am too new to WikiTree, to meet the requirements to edit pre-1700 Memorials, as I have done all my work in a different community tree and private trees. If I make enough other changes, and meet the requirements, I will consider it. But, I agree that it would be best to do more extensive changes to the Bio, so it resolves its internal inconsistencies.

On the timeline entry:

January 1, 1633: Edmund was listed as a freeman in Duxbury, Massachusetts.[2]

I don't find this specific date, or any reference to Duxbury in source 2, on either page 3 or 4. Source 2 states just "1633" (no month/day), and that it is the names of Freemen in Plymouth (the Colony, not any specific town). Now, if you review the image of the original record, you find a "1633-1" in the upper left corner, that is not in the transcript (Source 2). That corner does show a date, on later pages, though with the month name written out. But even then, it would mean 1633 1st month, which in the British Empire, prior to 1752 was March. As it is not double dated, as many original records were, it would be at least on March 25, 1633, New Year's Day, through the end of the month, if the "1" after 1633 means 1st month. January 1, 1633, was almost at the end of the year.

Here is the link to the image of the original Court record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3S3-4QXP-T Edmund Chandler is the 3rd name on the right half.

"Small" makes 2 separate statements for 1633.

a) It references the same 1633 list, and calling it just "1633" and Plymouth Freemen. No Duxbury reference.

b) Then at the bottom of the same page of Small, it says "At Duxbury, in 1633, his share of the mowing ground..." If you look up this in the transcript or original court records (page 14 of the transcript of Vol 1, or image 21 of the same familysearch.org film of the v1 original record), it gives the date 1 July 1633 for this Court Order. It never says "Duxbury." But, it does mention "Morton's Hole", and "Iland Creek" (Island Creek), in the context of places near Edmund Chandler, both matching Duxbury places. I agree with the conclusion this was at Duxbury.

Overall, I can see reason to state he was on the Freemen list of Plymouth Colony, for the new year starting March 25, 1633. I also feel the original records show he was in Duxbury, before 1 July 1633.

As to freemanship, Anderson reports Edmund is in the "1633" (in quotes) freeman's list, commenting that the name appears "ahead of those admitted on 1 January 1632/3," citing "PCR 1:4."

Consider adding more detail to this timeline entry, or at least giving source(s).

"1629 or 1630 Edmund most likely left Holland for Plymouth during this period..."

If you unravel the chain of sources: - Page 613 of "Small" - That cites Pages 294 to 297: - "History of Plimouth Plantation", William Bradford, 1898. https://www.google.com/books/edition/History_of_Plimoth_Plantation/OWFAcDEnVMEC?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PA294 - Page 294: The discussion starts just below "Anno Dom: 1629." - Page 297: At "[165]" stating that one company left England in May 1629 and arrived in "Salem and ye Bay" in August 1629, and the other left in early March 1629/30 and arrived late May 1630.

I suggest that "Nieuwestadt, Holland" in the timeline for March 26, 1619, be elaborated to make clear it was a district within the city of Leiden at that time, not the place some internet search engines suggest is Nieuwstadt, City in the Netherlands. This is shown by two spots in the citation used for "Small": "The England and Holland of the Pilgrims", By Henry Martyn Dexter, Morton Dexter · 1905. Here is the link to show search results for Nieuwestadt:

1) Page 577: This is the full reference to Edmond Chandler having a child that died on March 26, 1619. It says "Nieuwestadt (New Town)" in a section for what happened to the Pilgrims in Leiden in 1619.

2) Then in the Appendix on page 600, just before it summarizes each person found in Leiden, it states: "In connection with their residence in Leyden it should be noted that several names are those of districts, much like the wards of a modern city... Such are...Nieuwestadt..."

Should his latest possible birth be 11 Nov 1588, not 1592?

The latter, appears to be from "The Genealogy of Edward Small" and based solely on his becoming a Leiden Citizen on 11 Nov 1613, AND an assumption that the minimum age was only 21 years. The source cited is Page 609 of "The England and Holland of the Pilgrims", by Henry Martyn Dexter, Morton Dexter, 1905. But, that page only gives the abstract of the Edmund Chandler entry, not generic citizenship requirements. Those are stated earlier, on page 508: "To become a citizen one had to be twenty-five. At least two guarantors, themselves citizens, were required, and the payment of three florins and tweny stivers. The poorter's oath also had to be taken." If these are the sources, they say that Edmund Chandler was born by 11 Nov 1588, not 1592. If there is a better source for Leiden Citizenship requirements, which shows 21 years, that should be cited. Link to page 508: https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_England_and_Holland_of_the_Pilgrims/-EwiqC6neusC?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PA508&printsec=frontcover

If you want the original Citizenship record, the image is here: (2nd entry on the left side) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3MX-8G74 - The name might be "Edtmont Cgandelaer" - The only piece of information I see in the original, not in the abtract, is being from England (Engelant), no town included. The structure of the entry, and many of the words, match the example given for Roger Wilson, on page 509 of "England and Holland." Roger Wilson's entry is on image 212 of the same familysearch.org film. (second up from the bottom right).

Good work!

Your analysis lends further support to that of Robert Charles Anderson (1995), who placed Edmund's birth as "[b]y about 1587," basing that estimate on the birthdate for his eldest son, Samuel. As to the latter (Samuel), Anderson commented at length in placing his birth "say 1612."

Chandler-5086 and Chandler-194 appear to represent the same person because: From the dates and places on this profile, as well as the daughter, I think it's pretty evident that the new Chandler-5086 profile represents the same person as Puritan Great Migration immigrant Edmund Chandler. Please merge.

The list of children on the top section of the profile does not match the list in the biography section. More research is needed.
Note sent to BeckySyphers, as parents were removed and added back in. Notes would indicate that there should be more discussion on this profile.
