Umtali is the successor of Fort Umtali, which was the original settlement established near Chief Mutasa's kraal in 1890 about 14 kilometers north of the current city of Mutare. The name is derived from, some believe, the word Utare meaning iron or possibly gold and may well relate to the discovery of gold in the immediate near area of Penhalonga. The town was incorporated in 1847 and it became a city in 1971.
